im trying to choose between getting a monitor vs hdtv it will be hooked up to my sons computer used for gaming, xbox, and directv recever. i have been told a regular computer montor would be the best to get. would this be the case. the one im looking at now it at best buy
envision 24 hd lcd widescreen 1920 1080 100000:1 dynamic contrast ratio 5ns responce time vga hemi
but i dont know if i would be better off just getting a hdtv instead.

Monitor's usually have better picture quality than HDTV's as the pixels are packed tighter together giving a cleaner picture.

^^sumd it up right there...

My bro has a 20 inch hdtv, and its max res is 720p(1270/720) for monitor mode.

My 21 inch 1650/1050, and it looks quite a bit better.

But if you need it for both, just go with a tv, and use it for dual purposes. Its not like it looks bad...Just not as good as a monitor.

That logic is a bit flawed since there are tons of 1080p 24" TVs available. And 1920x1080 over 24" is the same pixel density regardless of whether it's a TV or a PC monitor.

Most decent HD TV's tend to have better viewing angles than PC monitors. Since you can get decent Full HD TV's for quite cheap, I would go with that. The option for multiple inputs (ie: XBox, PC, etc) probably a better option in this situation.

^^i completly agree. i have both a 25 in 1080p HP lcd screen and a 40 in 1080p westinghouse HDTV, both using hdmi, and both using the same PC, and the games and clarity and color vibrance and depth are better on the 40in HDTV. just try to get a 1080p HDTV that uses HDMI! lots of people think that the quality between dvi and hdmi (even dvi to hdmi converter) look the same, and that you cant tell the difference. i disagree here as well. hdmi will give that vibrance and depth that you cant get through dvi. so, 1080p and hdmi, and you'll be happy with a bigger screen, which will be cheaper than a pc monitor of the same size, plus you have a tv also.

well no offense to anyone here but just my input if image quality is all that matters a good high quality CRT Monitor with TV inputs do exist and still offer better response, viewing angel, color depth, and picture. I wouldn't trade my 24in Sony Trinitron for anything, but thats my 2 cents

i have a 32" hdtv and sitting at the same spot as my pc monitors the pixel on the hdtv are about the same size as my booger...

DVI and HDMI are the EXACT same signal, only difference is HDMI is capable to transferring sound. Thats the ONLY difference.
