so when i turn my computer on, I hear this click and then the sound of something beginning to run, then another click and the same something beginning to run sound... and it goes on like this forever. just constant clicks. I can't even turn the computer off after this by pressing the power button. I have to flip the switch in the back of the power supply.

I am guessing it's a power supply problem but wanted to check with some experts before i spend the time replacing stuff.

thanks.

Do you a disk in the drive or anything?
Where does it sound like it's coming from?
You want to be careful a hard drive can make noise when its failing.

the clicks are coming from the hard drive.

i replaced the hard drive with another. i dont hear the clicks but i hear the "starting to run" sound and then silence. and then starting to run again.

so i'm guessing the hard drive isn't the problem? i really don't know. i assumed it was the power supply because it's not letting me turn it off by pushing the computer power button and i have to go to the power supply switch in the back instead.

When did you replace it?
And if you leave it go (not powering it off) does windows boot up?

neither got me to windows. they both have a black screen.

the one i replaced is the one i always use. that had the clicks.

i replaced it with a hard drive from my old computer just to test it out. this hard drive worked a couple of months ago and as far as i know never stopped working. that has no clicks.

they both have the same start and stop machinery sound though.

it didnt really 'start' for either. just the same start and stop sound. one with clicks. one without.

my sister just got a dell but if i recall the power supply cables are weird. i dont think they connect to my hard drives... ill check tomorrow. i guess i just have to trouble shoot everything as annoying as it is.

yeah, i wont be able to check with the power supply from the dell.

I tried different hard drives and had the same problem on all of them so it's not the hard drive presumably. I really don't want to start buying products just to troubleshoot. Any ideas?
