Heat sink-cpu, always sticking together.

Alright I need some suggestions as to how I can remove my AMD athlon stock cooler without.... forcing the cpu out with it.

Whenever I go to remove it, I firstly have my computer run some CPU benchmarking tests to hopefully melt the thermal paste slightly for easier removal of the heatsink. But, it never ever works.

No matter how much I wriggle it to loosen it, it dosent un-stick. So, every time I take the heatsink off, the CPU is literally torn out of the socket, which is in the locked position at that stage.

Obviously, this is NO good lol.

What should I do?

And is this a common problem?

Thanks :D

Hmmm

That's a very strange problem. Most stock HSFs come with a pre-applied thermal pad. However, it is very easy removing that from the CPU. It should not be hard to that. If it is as hard as you are saying, then perhaps your HSF is "glued" on with a ceramic compound....which would be bad news.

Thermal pad? You mean that white foam thing that comes pre applied to the base of the heatsink?

I removed that... er, if that's the wrong thing to do then...

Crappies.

Hehe

Well it is OK to remove it as long as you replace it with something better. What did you use instead?

The thermal paste is literally in contact with the CPU, there's like a rock solid bond between them.
Then you did replace the stock thermal pad with thermal paste?

No, I removed the stock heat pad from the stock cooler thinking it was there to cover the stock thermal paste. There is no thermal pad on my heatsink, so the base of the heatsink is in contact with the cpu. The stock paste is glued to the cpu 0_o

It was my first PC build, so I didn't know that at the time.

Well, in any case, i'd take off the HSF, and thoroughly clean both it and the CPU, then apply some quality thermal paste, like Arctic Silver 5. Application instructions are here.

lol... i used to get that problem with my sempron... i used to pull until both the cooler and the processor came off the socket lol.... probably not the best thing to do but i never damaged it lol.... if you wanna be careful about it wiggle it while gently pulling.

i sure hope you didn't that'll definitely make it overheat. i guess you're joking though. yea, buy some silver 5 and apply it. a few tips:
1. clean the surface with rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth (such as Q tips or some coffee filters)
2. DO NOT TOUCH STUFF! oil from your hands WILL contaminate a surface, or the compound itself.
3. what i do is i put my hand in a plastic sandwhich bag, and apply the compound in circles so as to fill in any "microscopic canyons" haha
good luck! :)
