Will a socket 940/939 processor cooler work on an AM2 socket?

I think SOME are able to fit, but some aren't (depends on teh bits and bobs that come with sink). Read the item description, and see if it CLEARLY states that it is compatible with the AM2 socket.

most AM@ boards have such a black plastic bracket around the CPU.. same as the s939 boards.. so all coolers that are mounted with such a bracket will fit.


but in a review of the AM2 processors.. i read something about them beeing hotter than the s939's.. therefore the plastic piece on the motherboards were fitted with 4 screw's instead of 2 (like the 939 boards),.. so they could mount heavyer coolers onto the board.
so have a good look if the cooler is capable of cooling enough

Hmm..... I was looking at an Akasa AK 860 which can do 774, 939 and 940.

Would that be able to cool the AM2 processor enough (I was eyeing an Athlon 64 x2 4200+).

There not the same, Most 939s wont fit, the AM2s have open end socket braces!

this one will work on it since it has the AM2 verison which will fit on 939/775 as well...

Hmmmmm.... It looks real sweeeeeeeeeet .

I think that's a bit too expensive for me, so I will stick with the other one, seeing as it will work. Cheers for the info though.

Even if a heatsink already has a thermal compound, if I bought more paste and applied it myself would it work even better?

it says right there that it fits AM2,so yes it will fit the AM2 socket

It would depend on the thermal paste in question. Too many people jump onto the AS5 bandwagon, where the temperature differences are often very minor. The Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro, for example, includes high quality MX-1 paste, that I wouldn't replace.
