Hmm... when it comes to computers its safe to say I dont know jack. But it seems im interested in purchasing an operating system, preferably windows, since i've used the system for a while. Anyway my question was if I were to purchase windows which should it be? im quite confused with the OEM thing also. You see I have an old computer and hopefully sometime in the near future I may replace it for a new computer, and if im not mistaken OEM means I can only install the windows on a single computer. So if I were to install the window os on the computer im using now when I cant install it on the new computer, right? and also since I reformat my computer quite often due to a lack of funds (no anti-virius or reliable anti-virius) so that means I should purchase the Retail version right? Oh and unfortunatly i have no pervious versons of windows. So I guess my question would be is my only option to purchase Window XP or vista *retail? is vista out? hehe if anyone could help it's much appricated, also any advice as to were to purchase it would also be appricated (ex. NYC area retail store or website).

Whether it's OEM or not, you are only supposed to install it on 1 computer, but if you phone Microsoft, and explain that you are putting it on a new computer, they MIGHT let you.

OEM pretty much means it doesn't come in a fancy big blue box. It's the same OS.

Windows Vista isn't out yet, but it should be pretty soon.

ok let's see...

1. can you list your system specs? start>control panel>system

2. Here is a list of good free Anti-malware programs:

MS windows Defender (Anti-Spyware)

AVG freeware (Anti virus)

Lavasoft, AD-Aware personal (Anti-Adware

best of luck:) :)

There really aren't that many options.

OEM simply means that it doesn't come with fancy packaging.

Avast antivirus (totally free) works much better than a lot of non-free antivirus programs
so that means I should purchase the Retail version right?
Not necessarily

Vista is not out.

The sale of OEM software is contingent on the fact that it only remains with the hardware with which it was sold. Companies like Newegg continuously violate the OEM licensing agreement. I'm quite surprised they are still getting away with it.

Anyways, the idea is that if you sell the hardware that was bought with the OEM, the Windows goes with it.

Avast! is far superiour to AVG as has been mentioned.

Ad-aware is useless.

Spybot is useless.

Ewido, Microsoft Defender and Prevx1 seem to be the best ones at the moment.
