Hi everyone I'm new here and I came here with hopes of knowing what desktop to get and hopefully some of you guys can help :D

So I've been using a Toshiba with Windows XP (laptop) and its about 5 years old now and my parents (im 17) want to buy me a new computer that I would use for my senior year, and probably all through college.

What I want from this computer is speed, friendly interface, school friendly but with great gaming capabilities meaning no crazy load times, no bad graphics, no lagging etc.

So I don't need to overload on the gaming but I guess the more the better but I also need to keep in mind that I need it for school work as well. I'm alos into music and keyboards so I need a computer with alot of storage for programs etc.

I don't really know anything about computers and I'm kind of rushed because my parents are going to need the old laptop in less then a month. So I was just hoping if people here had suggestions about the best desktop for my needs (laptop would also be OK as long as it's not a laggy one especailly on games)

Thank you!

Budget? Whole set-up including monitor and speakers? or Just base unit?
Where are you living?
Prepare to build it yourself? It save at least 15%. But if you know nothing, I would suggest you find some friend who know PC to assist you if you want to build yourself.

If you choose not to build one, I would take a look at the Dell website. You will find that among the different computer manufacturers they will give you the most bang for your buck. If you have a little more budget then I would look to someone like pugetsystems.com as these are a little more customized.

Hello and Welcome, Enjoy Your Stay

Well if you're going to be gaming then I recommend you have one built up to your spec because Dell can be a tad expensive on their XPS series in my opinion.

If you are able to build it yourself, IMO that would be my first option. Prebuilts are usually very expensive and have crappy hardware.

I would be willing to build it myself but I'm not sure what I would need for each component, I'm pretty good with electrical stuff and I took apart my other computer that wasn't working so I'm good with that.

All I'd need to know is what to get? I live in Southern California btw

and budget... I'm not sure I'm guessing 1000ish?

*scratches head*

So what would be the best components for such a desktop? Again I'm not all freak about gaming I just need to be fast and have good graphics, no lagging. Is theres somewhere I can go to read up on computer components and whats what?

EDIT (didnt see the top post before posting this)

So these would be the optimal parts that I would want to get?

Yes. Here's why I picked the parts:

Q6600 - Although the E8400 is better in gaming, you said you'd be doing some school work ect. also. The Q6600 is great for multitasking, and still is great at games.

P35-S3G - Supports the 65nm (Q6600 is one of them) without a BIOS update. Also has the capability to upgrade to 45nm processors with a BIOS flash. Great overclocking potential also.

RAM - Cheap, has a low cas rating of 4, DDR2-800, and reliable. Patriot is a great company, as are others. The rebate just makes it better.

HDD - Western Digital is the one of the best companies. Seagate and Western Digital are the top 2 (in my book) best manufacturers. I've heard lately that some Barracudas were having problems, thus I went with the Caviar. There were also more reviews on the Caviar, leading me to believe that it was also more popular. 320GB gives plenty of space, SATAII for fast data transfer, and 7,200RPM! What more could you ask? You could switch to a 500GB if you needed more space.

CM Elite 330 - Great case for the money. Lots of space, great air flow, looks good, ect. What more could you ask from a case?

OD - DVD Burner. SATA for fast data transfer, perfect if you burn lots of things or watch lots of DVDs on your computer.

GFX - One of the best graphics cards. The rebate makes it a huge steal.

PSU - Has a huge power output, and at that price, it makes it totally worth it!

OS - Your choice. Vista or XP. You can switch it, or you can use your existing OS...

You should become a salesman! lol your convincing! Umm would I be able to get all these things from a store or would I just have to order them online?

Haha, maybe when I turn 15! Almost all the time online stores will have the best deals, before AND after shipping. Just look on BestBuy, I remember a 8500 going for $100, and on Newegg, $25 + shipping.

I have nothing against Macs. They're very stable (compared to and PC), and very incompatible with viruses. For gaming, I wouldn't recommend it. However, if you could dual boot Windows and Mac OS, and it has decent specs, you could consider it.

I was on another forum (mac forum) and found out that the iMac is decent at gaming and with the upgrade (sort of pricy) its very good.

Anyone can add anything else to that?

theres the specs on both the 24s what would I be expecting from the 2600 Pro?

How much of a difference would I see from the 8800 in terms of gaming?

hahaha both those laptops suck. i have nothing against imacs but if you want a computer that will play games while not doubling your budget, then a windows vista computer is your best bet.

the processors are half as powerful, the ram is weaker, basically your getting half the computer for literally twice the price.

But iMacs are so much better when it comes to multi tasking and theres really no problems with viruses, my brother has one and he has never had any major problems with it

No one stop you for purchasing an iMac
But the fact is that $2200 iMac have a slightly lower spec than what oscaryu1 suggested. And you pay double of price!
I am sure a good AntiVirus program won't cost you $1000.
