Whats up forum you got another noob here!

Names Casey and i recently purchased a stock Dell pc because i got a decent price on it. I have always wanted a nice pc because my uncle has always talked trash to me about being a Xbox fanboy. Well im on a mission to get a good pc going so i can shut him up with all the trash he's talking. Im not looking anything big at first. I was hoping to actually just be able to get a decent video card and just play games at mediocre settings for now. The pc i got is a Dell 660, its got an Intel i5 @ 3.0Ghz which isnt that bad i dont think. 8 Gigs of ram and 1Tb of storage. I downloaded Halo CE just to see how the pc ran, yes its an old game but im not sure how much pc's take to run various games. Again i know its old but all the settings are at its max and it runs fine and there arent any glitching or what i can splits in the screen. I was looking at getting a Radeon R9 270 or the 280. Been looking at a stronger power supply also. Would this set up be able to play most CODs at medium settings?

My brother plays COD and has a 6870. He plays on max settings. I can't recall the conversion, but both cards you are looking at will either be just as good or better than the 6870.
 
The R9 270X is about the same speed as a 7870 XT which was way faster than the 6870 anyway.

The R9 280X is about the same speed as a 7970 GHz Edition, which is faster than even the 6970.

You could get either the 270X or the 280X and be good for the vast majority of games, but you'll probably need to get a new power supply too. I recommend the Corsair CX600M.

Awesome, im getting excited for the first of the year lol. Might get a few additional upgrades like better RAM and what not.

SICKKK im friggen ready for a week without any bills lol. With getting games do you use steam to get them or just find a good torrent source. The pc i have it isnt a bad starter is it? Also i installed a cheapo nvidia GT 610 i believe. Yes laugh it up i know i know its a super garbage card which actually took my GPU rating down lol. I just wanted to see if i could get my pc to recognize the card because people have been saying store bought pcs have a tendency to be quite the female dog when installing a new card. As soon as i get my new card ill do a benchmark and see how it goes. I will start playing iRacing more too. As of now the pc runs a steady 60 FPS with a few options on High Detail. With everything on its like 25 FPS lol.

Nah, a store bought PC is still a PC and almost always don't have a problem installing graphics cards. What;s your budget for a new card?

Well for now i just want a decent card to get me started. If need be for a budget ill sell my gf and buy what i need. I dont really let a cost stop me, i am by no means rich if its what i want ill find a way to get it. The MSI R9 270X, all the reviews are good i just have to make sure it will fit in my case. Im just really excited so my sentences most likely are from one place to the next.
 
I don't know how long your case is, but a 270X should fit. You will alos need a new power supply, like a CX500M.

Already on it lol, got my tape measure from work so i can measure when i get home. I hope that i will get it to fit but idk, 10.5 is kinda big for the case i got.
 
BOOOO!! My case is too short =[ guess ill have to get another one now. Good news is i got a power supply though. Its an Antec Neo HE650 Blue. Will this power brick be enough? I believe i have to get new power adapters for the 2, 6 pin connectors on video card. Not sure yet though.

I thought the video said it was 10.5, my case is just a little bit over 10.25 inches from the side of the case to the hard drives. The Antec was purchased around 2 years ago. It was my dads old theater pc supply. His pc went out and its just been sitting. Dust didnt even stick on the fan, it has very little run time on it.
 
Then everything is good. The Antec doesn't even need an adapter, it has 2 6 pins. And the 270X will fit, just get a MSI 270X and install the PSU and you will be set :)

Alright with the power supply i will use just the main 24 pin plug for the mother board and then the adapters for hard drive and disk drive right? It had a few 6 pin plugs but im not certain how many.
 
It has a 24 Pin, for the motherboard, a 4 pin for the motherboard (make sure you do not plug this into the card, and make sure don't plug the GPU connectors to the motherboard), the 4 pin on the motherboard may also be a 6 pin, but usally not with OEM motherboards. There will be SATA powers for the hard drives and DVD ROM. No adapters will be necessary.
 
I suppose, but reference board length is 9.5 and most cards don't have a cooler past or much past board length.

With the 4 pin why not plug it into the board? The stock PSU had a 4 pin that was plugged in.

Yes the first card i was looking at was 10.5 inches deep. I have been looking at cards quite a bit here recently and it seems people are saying to just get the 270 and OC it. What is the difference between the 270X Hawk and the 270X?

I havent been able to find much difference between color and stickers.
