Help - 1st build

Hey everyone.

So I need help...i'm trying to build my 1st computer, and am stuck.

I bought everything, motherboard, cpu, ram, power supply, HD, & used an older case that I had.

I have it powering up and going through the POST test, then I am getting "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected boot device and press a key". I have my OS in the DVD/CD ROM, I press a key, and same message comes up.

I have a DVD/CD ROM on a ribbon cable, set to Master (but have tried Slave & CS also), using the black connector. I have that running to my EIDE connector on the motherboard. I have a SATA HD, using a WD-SATA cable, connected to the SATA-1 port on my motherboard, no jumpers currently on this HD; the options are SSC, PM2 Enabled Mode or OPT1. I have tried moving the jumper around on the DVD/CD ROM, tried both the Grey & Black connectors, messed with the BIOS boot options (though I don't think that matters), but cannot get past this issue.

I'm at a little frustration point, as i've been messing on & off with it for about a week. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I need to get it online asap, but also want to learn what i'm doing wrong. Thank you in advance!

Hardware:
Motherboard - ASUS P5K/EPU
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53G
HD - Western Digital SATA 500G
Power Supply -400w 20 pin SATA ready.
DVD/CD - TDK 840G
RAM - 2Gb
Video Card - RadeonHD 3450

Same thing is happening to me with an old laptop that's OS got crapped from a bad virus I had the same problem what I did was I threw that laptop under my bed and have not looked at it since, I am disgusted with it. I think it has something to do with the bios, do you have the newest version of your bios?

After you reboot the system -go into the bios and make sure that the dvd/cd drive is listed as the first boot-up device and not the hard drive or floppy drive-save the changes and start the system up again-just make sure the the hard drive isn't the first priority boot up device in the list.

Funny thing is I have the same problem with a junky old laptop that got it's OS cooked by a virus and I tried that and mine still don't work? I was thinking maybye it couldn't read the dvd for some reason I'm gonna try burning it on a cd... well I'm trying a live linux cd... it works on the laptop i'm on now.

Tried the BIOS change to DVD as 1st boot device, same problem. Do I need to update the BIOS somehow? I know i'm missing a step somewhere...grrr

So question comes to mind.

Do I need to run my driver disk (motherboard)? If I put that disc in at startup, I get a "make a disk for dos" menu. Options are:

1) make Intel ICH9R 32bit RAID/AHCI Driver Disk
2) make Intel ICH9R 64bit RAID/AHCI Driver Disk
3) FreeDOS command prompt

I went to DOS, but i'm really lost on this. Not sure where or what is next. Help please. Still won't read my XP disk.
