Help a Dad "guide" his son/new build

Greetings; Newbie here. I know how to turn on a computer and that is about it!
My son has saved his money to build a gaming computer and has assembled a list of parts. Before he plunks down his hard-earned cash I would like someone with knowledge, other than the kid a Starbucks, to ensure that the parts are at least compatible and that he is heading in the right direction.

Here is what he has:
Intel i-7 2600k 3.4 Ghz
Asus P8Z68-V pro motherboard LGA 1155
Corsair Cooling hydro series H70
Plextor Black SATA blu ray disc burner PX-B940SA-11
EVGA GeForce GTX 570 Fermi 1280 mb 320 Bit GDDR%PCIe 2.0 x 16 HDCP Ready SLI Support
Creative Sound blaster X-fi Titanium Sound Card
NZXT Crafted Series Phantom Case

I have suggested to him that he just "copy a successful build" from this forum, but, a father's suggestion to a 15 year old is sometimes ignored.
Thank you in advance for your assistance
Bill

Welcome to the forum. Your son will also require the following:

- Power supply
- HDD
- RAM

Other than that, the build you have listed is fine and will make a decent gaming PC.

Welcome to the forum! I'm also new here, and came for a similar reason (building my first computer). Another thing you can try for advice is if you work somewhere that has an IT department. I work at a college and consulted with the IT guy there. He was more than happy to chat about a build, and it helped a lot.

:)

Additional To Original Request: My son would also like a recommendation for a power supply. ie, how many watts and any particular brand?

Thanks again.
Bill

Might want to consider an i5-2500k instead also. Difference in games will not be much, if not any, and will save you $100.

where is he looking to buy from? there is a good sale on newegg right now if in the U.S. and some combos he might want too. i can link a good list if wanted with every needed part.

Any link would be GREATLY appreciated. The cash that my son has is burning a hole in his pocket and he is quite eager to SPEND SPEND SPEND.

Thanks for the help
Bill

what exactly was he looking to spend? no point in getting cheaper components like a 2500k if he has the money and wants to keep it as long as possible.

If it means anything I built pretty much the same thing. Here is the list of things I used.

Core i7 2600K LGA 1155 Zotac ZT-50203-10M

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 1280MB

ASUS P8Z68-V PRO LGA 1155 Z68 ATX Intel Motherboard

Vengeance Series 8GB DDR3-1866 RAM

LG 12X SATA Blu-Ray DVD Burner with Lightscribe

Samsung 830 Series MZ-7PC064D/AM 64GB SATA 6.0Gb/s SSD

Samsung 23" LED SA300 Monitor

950 Watt Silencer MK II ATX Power Supply

Carbide Series 500R Mid Tower ATX Gaming Computer Case

The power supply might be overkill but I heard not to go cheap or low on power and if you have the money why not? Plus I plan on dual graphics cards one day. I was confused about compatibility also and I got some good advice from people on here and this is what I ended up going with. Also I am not completely sure, maybe someone else has on input, but I don't think you need a sound card for this m/b.
