Help A Dummy Today.......please

hi there i have windows 98 on disc and i am trying to load it onto my computer. when i try to run setup it tells me i can't run windows 98 whilst i am operating windows xp, it then tells me i need to restart in ms-dos but i can't figure out how to do this.

can anyone explain ?
 
You need to make a DOS boot floppy. You're going to have to erase the entire hard drive to downgrade to 98 since you probably have your hard drive formatted with an NTFS file system. Even if it is fat32 i'd suggest doing it. The best thing to do is go to bootdisk.com and they have a windows 98 boot disk image that you can use to make a boot floppy to use. This is the best way to go because this boot disk will give you cd-rom support under DOS. You can then fdisk and format your hard drive and install windows 98. Is there a reason why you've decided to downgrade to Windows 98?

thanks for the input :)

and to answer your question i have just downloaded windows 98 for a friend i burned it with nero as a data cd. i was basically testing to see if i had got it right. does this seem right ?

i downloaded a zip file (about 130mb)
i extracted the zip file to my documents
which produced alot more files mainly .rar
i then extracted all the .rar files into a seperate folder
i then placed all the non .rar files which were left
into the extracted .rar file folder (which gave a combined total of over 6000 files)
and burned it as one folder with nero as a data cd

my friend is wanting to load this onto a quite old computer with no operating system do you think this will work ?
