Help a N00b build his first comp

Hi there... another n00b trying his hand at building a computer.

Because this is my first build, I would like the build to be fairly inexpensive and easy. I would like some functionality to it though.

I would like for it to have:
1) a Gigabit Lan
2) able to play HD video with no stutter
3) HDMI out-put

I will be putting Windows 7 on it. If at all possible, I would like it to be small in form since I am attempting to make a HTPC (as you might have guessed).

My knowledge base is pretty limited. I have replaced RAM, DVD drives and video cards... that's about it. I was always a little timid on building my own due to putting the CPU onto the mother board since I thought it required soldering and/or thermal gel. I recently saw a vid showing that the mother board now has clamps to keep it all in place. Excuse my ignorance if this was always the case.

Either way, thank you in advance for all help, Peter!

If you're only using it as HTPC and nothing that requires more graphics or processing horsepower like gaming or media creation then an AMD FM2 motherboard paired with a Trinity processor with it's built in graphics processing would be an ideal flatform.

Agreed with this.

Budget would help, how much are you willing to spend on this?

I'd like to be around $150. Main thing that I want to do is stream Plex from my house to my mom's house. I could go the GoogleTV rout, but if I could get her a computer for the same or less price, I rather go that way. Do you think this would be doable or am I asking for too much?

Thanks.

$150 will get you a power supply, a smallish hard drive, 4GB memory, and a cd/dvd burner-player. Still need motherboard, processor, case,,+$250ish,,,add more for blue ray if you want it.
