Help a Noob Build his First Rig!

Alright, and I just plug everything together and it will work? I don't need any cables or hardware or software or anything else other than an OS?

I don't know if I would wait for Windows 7 to be released unless you want to wait to assemble a system. Microsoft operating systems have always had issues when they are first released anyway. I wouldn't buy Windows 7 until Service Pack 1 is released for it. Microsoft Vista 64-bit works fine.

Well, im gonna say from experience here that while vista rc i would have never touched for a 24/7, but i am running windows 7rc as my 24/7 os. Reason? Its built off vista, its basically vista with some added improvements, which is why i wouldnt personally purchase vista now, as your gonna basically be purchasing a service pack to vista (windows 7) in a few months anyway.

So is Microsoft's plan for Windows Vista Service Pack 2 going to change it into a slightly different version of Windows 7?

Not really, but windows 7 is not really a fully new operating system. Windows 7 is to vista as windows ME was to windows 98SE, some changes, but not actually a totally new operating system(like the switch from windows XP to vista). Service pack 2 for vista will just provide some performance fixes, etc, and will not include the new taskbar that windows 7 has, the cpu graphics acceleration, dx10 emulation, stuff like that. So if i would re explain it, its not a service pack, but i kinda see it as one, as it is built off the existing windows vista structure.

Newegg is out of stock in the burner you recommended. Should I get a 20x SATA one or a 22x IDE one? Does my motherboard support IDE? Is IDE better? Thanks a bunch!
