check the other thread... there's no need for one if you have good onboard sound like that EVGA board you're getting does.
It's used to cool parts down... you'll find one on top of the processor of most computers with a fan screwed on it. It's basically a metal chunk with slits in it for air. And yeah, it's necessary, but the i7 CPU you're getting comes with one.
