help a novice with his monitor...

I know nothing about computers. I just got a 22" samsung with a res. of 1680x1050. my video card is a ge-force 5500 and it says it has a max res that is much lower. i loaded the driver and set my setting to a res of 1680x1050 and it looks like crap. how would my video card effect this and wat should i do. thank you
