help after installing Windows xp on laptop

I have just installed windows xp on my sisters laptop. I need help. I need to check the registry, It has dvd rom but it can't play dvds, the windows media player says VCD. I need help making the dvd rom read dvds. the dvd computer has a d-link Airplus wireless cardbus adapter, but I have not installed it, at leas I don't think so because I have my dsl modem directly connected to it, and when I remove the adapter the internet still works. I also want to know how to network this laptop to my computer. One more thing the internet does not show itself completely, to view the rest of the screen I have to click on the scroll bars at the side and at the bottom of the screen. Im not sure if that is normal inlaptops since this is the first laptop I mess with. If any one can help my with any of these things or all of these things I will apreciate it, thank you.

make sure you install a dvd decoder. usually it comes with the dvd and should ask you to install it. windows media player itself can not play dvd's.
