Help Build a computer

I would like to poll the experts here. I am thinking of building a computer. I want it to be able to run boatloads of programs at one time (10-20) if need be. I dont do heavy gaming, the most demanding game that I use calls for 2.8 GHZ P4 or better (i run it on a 1.65 C2D). I do want it to have dedicated graphics. The budget is around 500 max, but would like it around 350.

Thanks ahead of time

At that budget I'd recommend upgrading your C2D system - especially if you'd like to keep it around $350

For around $500 you can usually do something like:

Athlon II x2 255 Processor
Asus M4N68T-M Motherboard
Kingston Value DDR3 (2 or 4 gb...up to you)
500gb WD Cav blue HDD
22-24x DVD RW
Basic Case/450w PSU Combo (Generic)

No keyboard, mouse, monitor

I like the setup. However I plan on running Windows XP SP2 Pro. 64 Bit. I do not like the Vista/7 OS's at all. I already have a copy of the OS already.
As for the HDD, Would it be possible to get a smaller drive and add a bigger one for storage later?

You'll be doing a huge disservice to any decent hardware by running XP x64.
It's worse than Vista ever was in terms of compatibility.

Yes, you could get a smaller hard drive, but you'll only save $10-20 really.

ok. What about just running a 32 bit setup in for XP? I could still run 3.5 GB RAM, which should run anything I will do.
Or run dual boot with Vista/7 64 bit? (one or the other, not both) to use anything that needs more ram? My understanding is that with a 32 but setup, I can run as much ram as I want, but only have access to 3.5GB. Is this right?

You are correct about the 32bit OS and RAM.
If you're running 4GB or more RAM, you'll definitely want a 64bit OS.
Just not XP.

Seriously, with 4GB of RAM in this system, Vista x64 would be so fast you won't believe it.

I used to hate Vista...until I used it for a while. :P

But, if you're on a budget, and have the OS already, well...oh well.

I have used Vista (32 and 64 bit) and 7 (32 and 64 bit). I do not like them at all. I like the look and feel of XP. Would it be possible to run them both?

The reason I was asking about running more than 4 GB ram was I could run XP 32 bit for the main everyday task, and Vista or 7 for the really demanding, memory hungry task and games.

I am thinking that I can build with just the budget of 500 that mother gave me, and upgrade later to get a better system.
