Help building a computer.

Hello, I'm totally a newbie at hardware and all, and I think it is time to replace my 10 years old Desktop.

I'm looking for a gaming computer, but I think I might do lots of other things too with it. Anyone can help me which CPU to get? AMD or Intel?

These are what I'm looking at: (I don't know if everything is compatible or not but I research and tried my best lol)

CPU:

Mother Board:

Memory:

HDD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136073

Video Card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102752 or a GeForce 9800?

Case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021

Power Supply:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341010

DVD Drive: I don't know what type to get, SATA or IDE? I was looking at these two: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106228
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151171

These are the important things, right? I already got monitor, keyboard, mouse down. And should I use a LCD or CRT monitor?

All looks well but you might want to look at a different board. You dont need built on video if you are doing the video card. See if you cant place your money else where. As far as the drive. Do sata, ide is dying technology. If you are going to do hardcore gaming, you might want to up your cpu speed a little more.

Q: What is your budget?

Q: What will you be using this for?

Q: Do you already have an operating system?

A: Depending on what you will you this for AMD or Intel will work.

A: Either RAM will do.

A: Go with SATA for the dvd drive.

A: If you have the room for a CRT then that is ok...., but try to go with an LCD display now or if money is tight then get one later.

Opinion: I would go with this video card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102792

Opinion: No offense meant but a dual core processor in today's market will not suffice.

Opinion: Pretty nice build but I think everything is compatible someone more experienced might need to double check.

My budget is a little over 600. 800 top. Mostly, I'll be using for gaming and some college papers. I'm looking at Vista...64-bits. Is it cheap now?

Is this Quad Core decent?

If I get the video card CaptainAwesom recommend, do I need to change any of my set up?

And any recommend for a different mother board since sealevel said I should get one without built on board?

Well you definitely are a noob. If lockon gets an Intel processor it will be expensive and he would have to get an intel supported motherboard witch is also more expensive. So.... in his situation of this being a budget build, AMD would be an excellent choice for a processor especially since AMD offers the triple core processors which is perfect in this situation.

So everything is in place now, I think.

All the stuffs from my rebuild, except I'll go with what CaptainAwesom suggested. And the second video card I chose.

What is the max setting I can play on games? Example like Half-Life 2 or any games just released? I know I won't be able to run Crysis which I'm not going to play anyway.

Most of the games I'll play are MMOs...most of them don't need high graphic card.

Any last tips?

EDIT: Since the motherboard have 4 memory slots, how many GB should I get? I was going for 2 2 GB, or Should I go 8 GB?

Also they ran out of memory and the case I wanted, so I picked a new one:
This mem:

And this Case:

EDIT 2: My budget gone up to about $1000 over the Thanksgiving thanks to my dad. My current setup is about $600 after instant-saving and mail-in rebate. What should I upgrade since I have about $400 more to spend on?

Can someone help me please?

Also, I don't know if I need any cooling accessories. If someone would like to suggest something that would be great.

Last, how is both of my build now?

Looking for some feed back

First off let me state this plainly, I am not computer literate in terms of building a PC. I have a budget of around $1400 or so, but of course spending less is defiantly welcome. I am looking for a mild gaming computer, and one good for everyday functions. This is what I have so far, but am needing feedback if it is decent. I have no clue on motherboards so would definitely appreciate advice in that area.

Processor = Intel Core i7 Processor 920 (4x 2.66GHz/8MB L3 Cache)

Motherboard = MSI X58 Platinum Intel X58 CrossFire Chipset w/7.1 Sound, Triple-Channel DDR3, Dual Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, Dual PCI-E MB

Graphics Card = NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896MB w/DVI + TV Out Video ( also thought of the Nvidia 9500GT 1gb x2, but after looking up specs it seem that the GTX 260 is better.)

Ram = 3 GB [1 GB X3] DDR3-1333 Triple Memory Module

Hard drive= 500 GB HARD DRIVE [Serial-ATA-II, 3Gb, 7200 RPM, 16M Cache]

Would love feedback in any area, but need it most on the motherboard, I just can't seem to get good specs from anywhere to compare them. I also am not sure if that one is SLI compatible in case I decide to upgrade and buy another GTX 260 down the road.

About the Ram

The Ram is not compatible with the CPU I think from what I have read it only does DDR3 ram. Again not a computer person, just from what I understand from the Intel site where I was reading on the CPU.

oh i was talking to the other person. you should look at some of the other core i7 builds because tons of people have around the same budget and have made threads about it

I was just going to say I was under a 800 dollar budget and went with the E5200 over the AMD processors... the E5200 will out perform the 6000 from AMD after a slight over clock (as the 6000 I dont think can be OC that much more than the factory clock... not too sure)

As far as the video card I would recommend the 4850 by ATI amazing card that also outperforms the 9800gt easily

I would go with this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227267 instead because for one thing it has tighter timings, and secondly its cheaper AND its by a great RAM company that you can rely on

If you do get the E5200 CPU, I would go with a Gigabyte mobo ... this one maybe http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128359

Good luck bro
