Help building a gaming pc

Hello everyone :) I am currently in the market for a good gaming pc. I have saved around 1500$ so that will be my overall budget. Now, I know I could just go online and buy one from a brand name company, but I have heard from many places that buying the components to the PC and putting them together themselves is the most cost efficient way to do this.

Could someone give me a list of parts I could afford, one that would be great for a gamer and that would fall into my price range? Also, is putting together a comp really difficult? Is this something that I might not be able to do? I know very basics of computer but have not do anything like this before. Is there somewhere I can go that gives instructions on how to put one together?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Do you need Windows 7/8? If so, that's a $100 added.

Total with Windows, without shipping: $1240

Leaves plenty of room for you to pay someone, a friend or a professional, $50-100 for assembling the system.

If you were to splurge, by which I mean build the PC yourself and going for $1500 exactly, I would do the following:

Total with Windows, without shipping: $1500

I actually dont need windows. I have a Windows 7 disk already. But thank you for the response, this is a big help :)

Make sure it's a 64-bit edition, otherwise you'll lose a lot of RAM.
The Corsair AX760i is only $190 after a $20 mail in rebate. That PSU would last for years on years, and would be plenty powerful for you to add another 7970, should you need it some day.
(It's a $100 more than the TX I suggested)

If you choose to buy a second GPU one day, it's somewhat important whether you choose AMD or NVIDIA. In BF3, AMD has near-perfect Crossfire scaling, while NVIDIA excels in other games. But for a single GPU solution, it's not that important.

Just in case you do decide to go NVIDIA, the GTX-660 TI would be the most comparable GPU to the 7950.
