Help Building a New System

Hi, I'm thinking about building a new system. Any suggestions on what the best mother board would be to invest in? I want something powerful that can handle at least 4 gigs of ram and preferably with onboard LAN and Sound chip sets. I dunno, any ideas? thanks in advance.

Well, budget isn't too big of an issue, I don't really want to spend thousands, but up to $1500 or $2000 for complete system wouldn't be bad. As for AMD or INTEL, I've heard good things about both, I want one that can stand up to some good use and is really fast, but doesn't get too hot.

What will you be using the system for, and does the $1500-2000 include Operating System/Speakers/Monitor. And if so, which os are you looking at?

Actually the $2000 would probably have to include the OS and Monitor, speakers are something I can deal with later. I am looking to use the system as a main terminal on a small home network. Possibly using the one I'm on now as a firewall PC. But I don't do a whole lot of gaming, but I would like to be able to if I should choose. I do alot of video and photo editing, along with internet usage and e-mail. Plus I like to play music and was looking at maybe adding a tv tuner to the system as well. I would like to stick with Windows XP Pro as the OS too.

Ok, what size monitor are you thinking of using? Right now i would have to say 22" monitors are in the sweet spot as value for size/res.

well any motherbored you buy today will come with a capasity of 4 gigs or more, you dont really have to worry about that, if you want a good system in your budget you should go with the I7 or wait a little bit longer for the amd new proccessers come out, ummmm, all motherboards i have seen come with on board sound so you should be good with all the things you asked for just look around a little

Right on, I've looked at both ASUS and Elitegroup, which would you say was better, or do you agree with either of those choices?

Well heres what i came up with:

https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=8467485

Vista home premium x64 would be $99 vs $139 for xp pro 64bit, just to keep that in mind(put xp in the build since you said thats what you wanted), vista would have a better ease of finding 64 bit drivers though. Also, with Core i7 you will want 64bit as its tri channel, so 3gb and 6gb are the common memory configurations.

Basically this is whats in the wishlist:

-Vista compatible tv Tuner
-Evga X58 Mobo
-6gb Corsair DDR3-1600
-Gtx 260 Core 216 55nm Edition
-Core i7 920 Quad Core
-Asus 1920x1080 Monitoe (1080p HD with hdmi also) 21.5" Monitor(listed under the 22" monitors on newegg, but trust me .5" is not that much of a difference).
-Coolermaster V8 Cpu Cooler
-1TB Seagate Barracuda 32mb Cache SATAII
-950 Watt Coolmax Power Supply
-LG Dvd Burner with lightscribe
-NZXT Tempest, not sure on your tastes as far as cases, but at $109 its about middle ground as far as the price on mid tower cases(Kinda a placeholder, i love the tempest case, you might not).

That should give you someplace to start, grand total comes to $1,969.89 before rebates.
