Help building my first computer

Hello,
I am building my first computer and need some advise on what parts I need. I know some basics, but am a bit out of date. I plan to use the computer for mild gaming, but mainly for video and graphic editing. Does anyone have any advise of what I may need for that?

Hi,

We need to know your maximum budget and what currency.

Do you need just the unit itself or do you also need Monitor,Mouse & keyboard etc?

I'm looking at spending around $600-$900 USD. I have a mouse and keyboard already. Maybe looking at getting a new monitor if my budget allows, but its not a necessity.

do you have a preference of Intel or AMD? Also, AMD or Nvidia?
In OS, do you have a full copy (or unused OEM) of windows, or plan to use a Linux distro?

Wow thanks so much, you've been a great help! :D Any advice for putting a computer together for the first time?

Hey guys. Just curious, whats the whole Intel vs. AMD debate currently? I've been reading up on some other forums and some people seem pretty against AMD for reasons I'm not sure of.

Any recommendations for an Intel system?

AMD is fine, It will do anything you want it to. They are just going through their Netburst phase. They are slower clock for clock than Intel, and on average get less clocks. This may change in the future, but for now, I would not recommend against them. They save you money, thus letting you upgrade the rest of your system.

Ok, fair enough. I'm probably gonna go to Frys to pick up the parts tomorrow. Would a 5 year old Alienware case that I have work?

do you know if it is ATX or m-ATX? that's the only real deciding factor for that case, but you can grab a good case for 60 at least on newegg, the cooler master haf 912

No idea. This is what it looks like.

it should be ATX, but either someone else would have to say or you might just have to take the risk for the 60 bucks if it isn't. also right now what parts are you looking at getting?

Either what was recommended to me earlier in the thread, or this.

Open to suggestions still.

Whats the difference between the ATX and non-ATX case? I thought all the older Alienware cases were the same size.

better brand than ocz, ocz is decent but not as good as this, also this actually has more power than that on it's 12v rail which is what matters. and this gpu is a better brand and rated better, and the 560ti is about equal to the 6950 and with physx i think it's worth this price, and since it is pre-overclocked a good bit it should perform great. otherwise looks good :good:

and for the case, that is the label for the layout of the wholes that the screws on the motherboard go through, so the case has to be it for the screws to attatch the mobo to the case.

i actually had said that case earlier, is one of the nicest lookers under 100, also has good cable management too and is a good sized case too.
