I just built a new system and it will not start. When i hit the power button the fans spin for half a second and stop. What components could be causing it??

try making sure you made all the right connections from your power supply to your motherboard. make sure that certain plugs aren't switched around.... because the way the little plugs are put o the pins actually does matter. consult ur motherboard instruction manual for this. also.. depending on the wattage of your power supply... you might not be supplying enough power to a certain companent in ur system... most likely ur CPU.

System:
P4 2.8 800fsb
asrock mb
WD Raptor 10k
1 gig dual channel geil memory
ati radeon 9550 256 ram
the power supply is a 400watt max i think it says 230 on the side of it though

This is the first computer i have built. I believed I followed the motherboard intructions correctly. Any tips?

no beeps
Another interesting thing is that the computer power light on the front of the case will stay on but nothing responds.

What will the computer do if it has a bad cpu?

I would plug in the Speaker wire (from case) into your motherboard just to see if you get 1 short beep. if you do get this beep it passed POST (power on self test) if you dont then you know something is not right. I would remove everything and just put back whats requires to boot video card, ram, cpu, psu. dont need any drives.. its possible you didnt seat something good like the ram, I would also try ram in different slots.

if the cpu is bad then it could do what your describing.

had this problem whn building an athlon system.

i had forgot to put thermal tranfer goo in between the processor and fan.

Theses babies warm up fast

Thank you everyone for info, im trying every suggestion.. I did put arctic silver compound on.

The computer powers up for about a half a second, long enough for the fans to spin three or four revolutions. Hard drive doesnt spin, monitor doesnt display anything etc.

You didn't forget the little square 12V power connector did you?
Otherwise, it could be a bad motherboard. I would reseat the memory... take out any un-necessary components like HD, CDROM, floppy and check again.

Nothing. But unless youve dont something horribly stupid (which you'd know right away) the likelihood of a "bad cpu" is pretty slim

What PSU do you have?

This happen to me twice The first it was a bad PSU and the second was that it was having a grounding issue I remove the regular screws and replace them with the plastic type that have a form of clip. If your PC is on top of your desk then put it on the ground then see if it would turn on and if it does then you got a grounding problem. Hope this helps

Just read first post and then posted this, my bad? :P. I had this happen to me and what it turned out to be was a bad cpu and motherboard. Yes both where blown.

Other, plz give us the model of your motherboard
cuz some asrock have an agi that is almost agp, but not...
And also if your video card is agp or pci...

If the power supply is indeed only 230W, that could/would be a problem. The only other thing that I can think of is something touching something that it shouldn't. If it was a bad CPU, the fans would still go on. Does the HDD go on? (i.e. can you hear/feel it??)

edit:the fans would go on if they were connected to the PSU. If they were/are connected to the mobo, I dunno what they would do with a bad CPU.
