Help buying a new GOOD laptop

Hey guys, I can already tell you get alot of these posts. So sorry for wasting more of your time.

I would feel I know more about computers then the average man and have a good idea of the laptop I want to buy, I am not sure if I need all the power I am prepared to hand cash out for though.

I want an almost state of the art Laptop (maybe a Desktop) but NOT to play games. Just for new media etc.

I have a budget of no more then £1000 (probably around $1300 american dollars).

Could you tell me exactly what spec I should be looking for. I want an Intel based Laptop and figure I definately need a Core 2 Duo.

Edit: It may be obvious from my post but I need it to be future proof (3 or 4 years perhaps).

Edit: :D Again, I am in the UK so please could you find me ones I could buy.

That looks quite good thankyou :). See now this is where I would start being obsessive and say do I need 6mb cache, or for me who does not want to play games not need it?
 
I am in the UK too and whenever i buy any computer parts i've always found:

www.overclockers.co.uk

and

www.scan.co.uk

to be the best for prices and delivery. always next/2day delivery times and they do sell laptops. Overclockers sell very good, cheap performance parts and scan sell mid-performance parts, so you should find something for what you need.

If you go to the modify on normal model, put it up to 4GB of RAM, add vista home premium and you are on £984. The specs are awesome for what you need, and are future proof. You have your core2duo processor and there is 4GB of RAM in there too, more than enough. It also has a good video card in there for picture/video editing and what not or some gaming.

Again got your core2duo in there and 4GB of RAM and a decent video card. The sound quality is ace and the screen is HD so you will get better quality for what you want it for. It is also wireless G and N, so when N networks are the norm, you will be ready for that.

That looks the same as the one from OCUK, but it is slightly different. The graphics card isn't as good, but still more than enough for what you need it for. The processor is better though, It is clocked higher with same cache and frequncy. Apart from that, i can see no difference. This is also the cheapest option and if i had to pick from the 3 posted, i'd go with that one because it seems to be the best value for money.

Would you guys say that getting a good graphics card is a good purchase? I probably wouldnt use it for gaming but do plan on using it alot for video.

Does it relieve strain off the processor somewhat?
 
what happened to the exchange rate?? i thought it was one pound to 2 dollars. now its 1 pound to 1.43 dollars.
