Everything looks fine as far as I can tell. Be sure that you get a 64 bit OS (like Vista 64 bit or download the Windows 7 64 bit beta for free!) so that you can utilize all 4 GBs of your ram.

I would go with the first spec. New phenoms II are too nice to pass them. And they are more like Intel quads than ever before. And even overclock good. But I would get 790GX board over 790FX. Because GX is newer and has better southbridge or something and it works much better with phenoms, including better overclockes. ANd 790GX also comes with crossfire ready dual PCI-e if you wonder.
And why Dominator memory again, why everybody wants it? It's not that perfect, may be only fancy but that's it. There are cheaper and better memory options out there, I would take OCZ reaper or G-Skill over dominator at any time. check ratings on memory.
And for the videocard - do you think you can afford GTX 260 Core 216 because it's so much better, like GTX 280 killer some would say?

2nd.
Main Reason is the graphic card and motherboard combination.
AMD set up with 790FX chipset allow you to crossfire, not SLi. So with that set-up, you are wasting money on the motherboard.

Ah good catch! Yea go with an ATI video card instead.

Phenom II 940 performs worse than E8600 in gaming (it is even worse than Q9400)

You can get Q9400 with BIOSTAR TForce TP45HP LGA 775 Intel P45 Motherboard for $319

Here are some benchmarks that have both Q9400 and 940 benchmarked

can u guys help me with this because i am still quite unsure on what to buy. i no with the memory i would like something in the region of 4gb but when it comes to the cpu and mobo i haven't a clue at all. Its been years since i last built my pc as you can see from my out of date spec lol. Im not to bothered about how much i have to pay just as long as the cpu is aroung 3 ghz.

Now with the graphics card i would like something fancy and up to date so i dont have to upgrade anytime soon, but bearing in mind the only game i really play on is medal of honor.

with the hdd ive got my eyes on a 10000rpm drive but i have been reading some reviews that they seem to be packing up completely just after a year or so and loosing all their data. has anybody else heard anything like this, and would it be a wise choice of hdd to go for?

Oh that Q9400 is just a few FPS higher than AMD 940. In lower settings they both go in hundreds FPS, on high settings would be tie because of the videocards! I consider it's equal. And E8600 is so dual core and I do not doubt that every single app now or in near future will use quad core support.
I would get:
MAD, oh no it's AMD 940
AMD 790GX (yes GX with better ratings) with 2 PCi-e
ATI HD 4870 1Gb which could be found under $200
Any 4Gb of reliable DDR2-1066 but not Dominator
Good 700W+ PSu

And I would be happily playing ever after - all new games with highest settings. And I would save bunch of money for approx same performance against Q9400 with 790i and GTX 260.

But if you can pay for Intel setup, you can get it as well - yeah it will be little faster, may be not little with DDR3 memory. Just make sure you get at least GTX 260 Core 216

Holy crap you have a grudge against amd. I search new threads with amd phenom's mentioned, and you're in every single one preaching the gospel of intel and the damnation of amd!

Amen for that. Get a 4870 1gb since it's the card for that platform.
