Help buying new ram

hey every1 i need ur expertize again, i wana buy som more ram, i read somewhere that ram is sometimes the best bet wen wanting som extra power in ur gaming (not sure if true) but hey ive only got 512 mb , i want 1 gb ram so all i gota do is just buy another 512mb stick to take it up to 1gb right???
This is my ram specs plz advise me on what to get as there are SO MANY!
Module size: 512mb
Max bandwith: PC2700 (166mhz)
Manufacturer: Samsung

Basically just get another stick of 512 MB PC2700. A good value level (ie Kingston ValueRam) stick with a CAS latency of 3 should be fine. A few decent brands - Corsair, Geil, Kingston, Mushkin

Cas of 3? That's the worst CAS (besides 4) there is. i would say for the same price you can get some Mushkin or something that does 2.5-3-3-5 or better. www.newegg.com is a pretty good place, have 512MB sticks really cheap, you shouldn't spend more than $80 i think if your going for ValueRAM.

Yes a CAS of 3 isn't great, I was thinking more in terms of price and I'm assuming the stick he has in there isn't a high performance one.

Erm correct me if im wrong but he comes from England, and newegg is a US website as far as I know so if that is true the link you sent him is useless unless he wants to spend laods on shipping it.

yes you're correct, they don't ship to England. Even if they did i don't think shippping would be loads...a stick of ram is tiny lol. But maybe he could use newegg.com as a price comparison, or just an inventory to look at and find something...then see if he can get it from a different site. didn't realize he was in England my bad.

granted but if you think about it from CAS3 to CAS2 is generally only a 4-8% performance boost

lol...i'd take a 4% performance boost:) but if it cost me more than $20 maybe not...

Yes, that's basically why I recommended 3. How would the performance/operation change if one stick was CAS 3 and the other CAS 2?

Samsung Original 512MB PC2700 CAS2.5 (MY-006-SA)

Price: £57.52 Including VAT at 17.5%

How is dat, off overclockers.co.uk

It is just speed. You could get 3200, it just depends on whether or not your motherboard supports it....what mobo do you have?

wot is cas 3
CAS is the main latency timing (how long the memory controller has to wait for the RAM to answer) so the lower the CAS timing the faster your RAM answers, but as I said earlier from 3-2 is only about 4-8% improvement, since your current RAM is PC2700 CAS2.5 you might as well match it

How do i post images i clicked on add image but it said some user prompt script??????
Ok , im gradually starting to understand ram now. So shud i get PC3200 if its faster then. Or do i want to get the same ram i already have.
Motherboard is:
Model:K7S8X
Chipset:SiS
Wana post image of my CPU-Z

Unless you plan to replace all your RAM, stay with the pc2700. When you have 2 different types of RAM combined, they will run at the lower or lowest speed.

Agreed although replacing all the RAM isnt much of a deciding factor :)
