Help Buying New System & CPU

I want to buy a new PC but I am totally confused with

(1) Hyper Threading
(2) Dual Core
(3) Core Duo
(4) Core 2 Duo

I barely started understanding that P4 3.8 GHz was the fastest sometime ago.

But now with above 3 how do they compare to P4 3.8 GHz in terms of Processing power ?

How much faster is the Latest Core 2 Duo in terms of P4 3.8 Ghz.

What is the difference between Core Duo, Core 2 Duo & Dual Core ?

Thanks
Kevin

Core duo is intels new Dual core processor, the Core 2 Duo is the newest line from Intel and the best consumer/enthusiest processor on the market as of now, the 3.8GHz presscott is kinda like some trash now, the Athlon 64 series has two processors in its line which are better i think, and then there's the AMD Athlon 64 X2 line which dominates the Pentium D line, but then intel has the Core solo, which is the best single core processor. so, as for a list of the top processors in overall performance:
Pentium 4->Athlon 64->Pentium D->Core Solo->Athlon 64 X2->Core Duo->Core 2 Duo

HyperThreading was a stopover before dual core. Simply put, it's was a way to pretend you have 2 cores when you really have 1. You get a little more performance (vs single core non hyperthreaded) in a multithreaded application but a little less performance in a single threaded app.

Keeping Future in mind as well as upgrading or exchanging in future, Core 2 Duo seems to be the consensus.

Thank You ALL for great inputs & suggestions. I really appreciate it.

Kevin
