Hi i recently installed windows 7 after finding my machine aint built for the job so i wish to go back to xp and save windows 7 for another comp, SOOOO down to the buissness when ever i try to install windows xp i just get a compatibility error saying my operating system (windows 7) is higher than xp so i cant install it. i was orignially running xp. HOW DO I GET AROUND THIS!??!!?

You need to boot to the windows xp install cd and delete the existing partitions, repartition and then format and install windows. You aren't trying to install XP while booted inside w7 are you? You can't downgrade while inside another OS.

Sorry, once again im a noob. so is a "partition" like a segment of a hardrive used for something specific? And by the way i'm having second thoughts about this. I have found out that its just my RAM slot which is causing problems. I think it MAY be dirt. I opened my computer last month and cleaned it from dust. then a week after I knew something was causing problems with the ram and everything I opened it up and took them out and tested one by one until i caught the culprit. it was my ram SLOT not sticks and there were orange marks in the slot so I cleaned those put the ram back in and it performed better but it still has BSOD's when it is in I put the ram back in so I was completely sure it was the problem. I was thinking to get my original speed i should buy one 2GB ram chip and use the working slot. Windows 7 is not causing me problems, I think the system it self is fine. It can handle Aero features to my surprise. To back my ram slot problem theory up: I used two ram sticks one after another both sticks were fine so its the slot.

Well unfortunately each slot will only hold up to a 1gb stick, so you are only limited to 1gb of memory if that other memory slot is actually bad. You might want to take it somebody and see if they can actually get it working by cleaning that stuff out of it.

If the slot is bad, then I still recommend going back to xp.

I would like to revert back to XP though. on... lets say third thoughts. So would you mind doing a step by step to reverting back? I know a partition is like.... half or quater of the drive split up into a virtual drive? is that right? Yes ill sort the slot out at a shop. probably PC World

Oh and you know that program you reccomended me? the imgburn thingy? Its realy good but its strange... when i started it up there was a message saying "And then from outer space a man bought him back to life with cosmic dust"

A DOS tool called KILL DISK 4.1 can fix your problems for reverting back to XP.Just use the KILL DISK 4.1 and with it completely format the HDD and make a clean XP install.

Cheers!

Patrick D,

If you wish to revert back to your previous operating system you will either have to boot from the Windows XP CD or boot from the recovery partition on your computer. It sounds as though you are attempting to run the Windows XP Setup from within Windows 7 when you actually need to boot from the cd and perform a clean install.

For future reference and for those planning a migration to Windows 7 it is always best to ensure your current hardware configuration will be compatible first.

Prior to migrating to Windows 7 it would be best to download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor will determine if your current computer configuration will be compatible with Windows 7, for further information as well as a link for download please go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx

Another resource to verify compatibility is available at the Microsoft Windows 7 Compatibility Center located at the following link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx

Also, please note that when migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 you will not have an "in place upgrade" option. You will however have the option to select "custom" install when prompted. The Windows 7 install process will then copy all of your data in "My Documents" over to a Windows.old folder within Windows 7 itself. All applications and documents stored in other locations will have to be reinstalled / transferred manually.

For more information on the Windows 7 Upgrade, please go here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-7

For additional assistance with the migration of Windows XP to Windows 7, please go here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/ee150430.aspx
