HELP! Computer freezes intermittedly

Anyone know what could cause by computer to suddenly search the CDRW drive on its own? In the process, it freezes my computer for up to a minute, then a repeats a little while later. Windows doesn't boot or shut down promptly because when it searches the CDRW drive, it stalls there for minutes. Any ideas?

Auto start thing?

Does it happen when you first put the cd in or can it just be in and it randomly happens

The search in the CDRW drive occurs whether or not a disk is in the drive or not. It just automatically starts trying to start the drive. When it does this, the drive light comes on and freezes the computer. If its auto start, how would I correct this?

It cant be auto start, thats a feature that will run the suitable file on a CD when AND ONLY WHEN it is actually inserted, it wont be trying to autorun nothing....

Im guessing, as its a CD-RW drive, taht certain applications are trying to write to it or access it, then perhaps windows gets confused when there is nothing to read....
