Help Computer turns on after couple of tries

well i beleive 4 months ago my computer started shutting off by itself. i began to look online and it was something about over heating so after it shutted off by itself i touched the top part and well it was pretty hot so i opened the side panel and that seemed to do the trick. 2 months later it started not to turn on normal, i press the power button and since i have the panel still open i see that this fan runs and everything but noting happens. after a couple of times of turning it on and off and on and off... it starts.
i tried disconnecting the power cord and back but nothing.

computer is a HP Pavilion Slimline s3100n
 
Is there a lot of dust inside the case? Look especially inside the cpu cooling fan. If you see its all clogged up, you need a can of compressed air and blow it out. But now that you are having problems turning it on, it sounds like you have hardware damage. You may want to try reseating the memory and possibly resetting the cmos. If you aren't computer savvy, you may want to take it in to have it looked at.
 
you might have a stuck case switch, or a bad connection to the board from the case switch.
Clean both as well as possible (use care on the motherboard pins) and inspect the wires to the board for binding or wear to insulation.
Could also be a dying power supply.
