I have a HP Pavilion desktop. Recently it must have frozen up, or that is what the kids are telling me and they forced it to shut down by holding the button in.

Now when I try to start that computer it beeps a series of beeps, sounds like it it trying to open up and then just shuts itself down.

Can anyone help me figure out what has happened or how to fix it without losing everything on the hard drive?
Thanks for any help!!

Also I am running Windows 98 on this system.

I have a HP Pavilion 8562 and running Win 98. The pattern is one long beep and then two short beeps a pause and then one long beep and three short beeps.

Based on the "very useful" pheonix BIOS beep codes the error is on the "Jump to UserPatch0" operation and you need to 'trouble shoot the motherboard' unfortunatly the Beep codes they provide don't specify long/short, only a count so this is the best match I could come up with, all I can say is try calling HP support, they should have a free line.

How would I go about troubleshooting the motherboard? Is there something specific I should look for physicially, such as RAM card falling out, etc.?

Yeah, check all the connections and the like. Like I said your best bet is probably going to be calling their customer support and tell them the beep your getting, I think they will probably tell you to replace the motherboard. If you have another computer you can take the harddrive out of the broken HP and install it as a slave and copy over what you need.

does your motherboard of that pc has a diagnostic LED system?
(mainly that are 4 led's)

anyway, the beeping means the pc had a hardware error during startup (like no RAM found, or no grafics card.)
what motherboard is it? you have to look on the page of the mobo manufacturer, for the manual (or youve got it at home with your pc). the meaning of the beeping (what error fits to the beeping) should be in there.

I am stumped...I have tried everything. Nothing is loose on the motherboard but I cannot figure out the name and number of the motherboard. Can you tell me how to decipher this?
Thanks!

No really what cromewell said is right i searched for about 15mins before i found this...your bios is a pheonix they say pattern "1-2-1-3 (12h): Jump to UserPatch0"

"Explanation: There is a system problem that is related to the motherboard or one of its internal components.

Diagnosis: There is most likely a problem with the motherboard.

Recommendation: Troubleshoot the motherboard."

http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/comp/mbsys/gen_Failure.htm theres the guide i found on how to 'troubleshoot your motherboard'.
