help decide with laptop purchase

hi, i recently bought a hp dv5000 laptop, which is a beautiful laptop by the way, but video sucks, so im thinking of returning it and getting a Dell 6400 which has crappy design unfortunately compared to hp, but a lot better performance with 1.83 dual core intels and x1400 256mb video

so my qustion is the following, i have a desktop with geforce 6600gt 128mb, 1gb ram, p4 2.8, im satisfied with gaming on it, how do u think the games will run on dell 6400 1.83 dual core intel, 1gb ram, x1400 256mb compared to my desktop?

The x1400 would perform worse, it's on par with a 9600XT. I had a Dell E1505 with a 2Ghz Core Duo and 256MB x1400, i was able to play CSS at high settings with a decent framerate, but not on the highest settings.

It's a good card if you dont plan to do alot of heavy gaming, or if your just going to use it for ocassional gaming. But no way is it going to be better than your 6600GT.

how much worse? i play mostly unreal tournament(everything on high), everquest 2 and hitman bloodmoney (high with 2xaa), and with 6600gt i have to play eq2 on "performance" setting, one below balanced, how much worse is it going to be?

It's hard to know for sure, since it is a newer card and the new technologies help out in a few areas. I would say about 25-35% worse in some games, and about 40% worse in benchmarks.

there are 2 computers i am looking at now:

dell : t2400 1.83 dual core intel, and x1400 256mb video

hp : t2300 1.66 dual core intel, and geforce go7400 256mb video

with everything else being same, which one will do better job at games?

i really like hp design though, just lacks bluetooth, and dell has it...

I would go with the Hp, I have the 7400go and its pretty damn nice.

Thats tough, the dell has a 100GB hard drive and its cheaper. But it doesnt have the better graphics

The Hp has a smaller hard drive but a pretty sick GPU. Do you really need the media center thing?

If you want the media center thing then get the HP no doubt. If you really dont thikn you need then go with the Dell.

you can ust go to dell's website and configure your own. i configured a e1505 from dell for 1,262. here are the specs

Intel core duo t2500 2ghz

win xp media center with remote

1gb ram

120 gb hdd

256mb radeon x1400

8x dvd burner

or
Dell xps m1210 for 1,554
Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2300E 1.6ghz

win xp media center with remote

1 gb ram

100gb hdd

geforce go 7400 256mb

24x cd burner/dvd combo

the x1400 is better than the 7400.

ok well, there it goes

i was torn between HP dv5000 and Inspiron 6400 (hp canada doesn't let u customise, and dell canada has fewer choices than US counterpart)

hp had 1.66 ghz cpu and dell had 1.83 both intel core duo
hp had 80gig hdd dell has 100gb
hp has go7400, dell x1400 both 256ram (128 on board + 128 shared)

otherwise they are totaly identical, except that if u get a DELL with media center xp, it comes with a bulky remote, and HPs comes with one u can store in a special slot.

i favored dell a bit because after doing research i found out that go7400 is a bit worse than x1400 (that 64-bit bus on go7400 looked suspicious to me)

in favour of HP's were its beautiful design (i have a dv5000 with integrated video sitting next to me), and media center with that neat remote slot.

so i had a smoke, ate, and decided to buy a DELL, since i can lift my ass to switch chapter in DVD if i want to do so, and i guess dell design isnt that bad after all, i like dell keybord layout better, and performancewise DELL will be a bit better for ocasional gaming.

So i had another smoke, then ordered the following:

Dell Inspiron 6400
Intel Core Duo T2400 1.83 ghz ( the only option available on canadian dell site)
ultra sharp sxga+ /w truelife lcd
1gb ram
100gb hdd 5400rpm
256mb x1400 video
dvd-+rw
plus all regular stuff like wireless so on...

after $395 discout total is 1,494.17 (curse the 15% tax!!!) $cad = 1,356.86 $usd VS HP that i was taling about at 1689.99 (goddamn taxes) = 1,534.68 $USD

however, if i lived in USA, i would definitely configured the HP on the website to match or exceed dell specs (canadian one doesn't let you do that)
just out of interest:

dv5000t:
with identical specs to dell above except i took 2.0ghz cpu, media center windows and remote, comes up to USD1,314.98 (after 100 instant rebate)
i dont know if u guys pay any taxes on top of that, but i wish i could get that comp (no, i dont feel like sending to a friend in USA and then have it shipped to canada, gona cost a fortune with customs and shipping)
what can i say, god bless america lol

now i will return that dv5000 with integrated video i stupidly bought 2 days ago, and will wait for my dell to ship and stop second guessing cuz theres nothing i can do lol, this is my 4th dell i hope mike won't let me down
