Help! Dont know what cpu works with my pc

Hey guys.

to be honest im kind of a newby with this, i know how to change it and stuff but i have no idea what cpu will work with my computer and have no idea on how to check so any help is greatly appreciated.

if you could tell me how to get the information you need then i will reply with everything and if yuo could also link me to somewhere that delivers to UK and a fairly cheap one aswell please

We need to know what socket your Motherboard is. AM2/AM2+/AM3 (AMD sockets) LGA 775/1156/1366 (intel sockets). Download CPU-Z, look under the CPU tab, and tell us the CPU. We'll know the socket, but it says anyway ;)
how old is this computer?

It isn't just the socket which matters, certain motherboards can only handle certain processors of a certain family because different processors in the same socket draw different amounts of power and work slightly differently to each other, so there isn't the instruction set in the BIOS. If the latter is an issue, that can usually be rectified with a BIOS flash to make newer processors work, however if it is a prebuilt computer, you will probably not have the option to do that, as neither the motherboard manufacturer, nor the computer manufacturer will release an update, as upgrades aren't needed for most people, so it is a waste of time and resources for the company.

If you can tell us the brand/model of the motherboard, or if it is a prebuilt system, the manufacturer/model of the computer, we can tell you which specific processors will work

Yea, sorry. Also certain Mobos will not support certain FSB's.

Well, one like the E6500 would be "fine" for todays games, but only at medium settings. You'd want something like a core 2 duo/quad for more power. I reccomend the Q6600 - excellent bang for buck.

ok then thanks ill probably get that one and it will run most games with decent graphics because i dont want to spend that much money and end up having to buy a new one in a couple of months.
