My processor in a computer im trying to fix up is over heating...as in im in bios (which i know keeps the cpu pretty cool coz its not as hard wearing as windows) and the temp will slowly increase even though the fan RPM is increasiing to try to keep up.... Im almost certain that its the heat sink gel because i opened up the hea sink and the gel seemed to be dried up....

So the main question is:

Am i rite in my assumption or could it be something else because i cant see what else it could be,

and also what could cause the gel to dry up within a month, because thats when some was last applies (bare in mind this comp hasnt been doing anything during this period)

Chances are the thermal paste was crappy. Do you know what brand it was? What are your CPU temps?

yea it reached about 70s and its a pentium. paste probably was crappy wasnt me who did it...

incidently how much would decent gel cost?

thanks

The best for the money would be Artic Silver 5, for $6. After time is does dry, and thats normal.

Also, when you turn your computer on and your in BIOS, it will heat up since it has a chance to warm up. Think of a car engine, once you turn it on it's pretty cool, but as it stays on it gets hotter.

Thanks! also one more thing...will i need to get some sort of solvent to clear all the dried stuff off the processor?

Yes, you can use Isopropyl (sp?) Alcohol, or use Arctic Slivers cleaning stuff. You can buy Isopropyl from a chemist. (Pharmacy, Drug store what ever its called the other side of the pond :D)

New news!
I'm supposed to put gell in my heat-sinks to cool my CPU down?

Yes

It conducts the heat of the processor to the heat sink. (P.S its chemist where im from...probably meaning we are from the same side) Thanks for the help yall!
