Help figuring out what laptop to buy

Hi, I currently am in the market to buy my mom a new laptop for her birthday next week. I am a mac guy and she will not cross over, so I'm need of some help figuring out what would be good.

Currently she has a Toshiba Satellite L305 that she bought for like $400 with a printer and some other stuff in a package Best Buy had going back in 2008. The laptop has been great for her and the only issues were it needed a new hard drive 2 years ago and I also upgraded the ram to 4gb.

She typically uses her laptop for surfing the internet and doing stuff in microsoft office. I'd say she uses the computer a minimum of 3 hours a day, but battery life isn't too important. She also doesn't have much on her hard drive.

I'm looking for something with a screen in the 15 inch range and under $600. I started looking at Toshiba's again, but do not know if they are good or if there would be a better alternative. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks in advance!!

Hi mate. you should definitly try the site Newegg.com. I just learned about it, but it seems pretty nice. also if your mom only uses the laptop for surfing and words or whatever, then save some money, those things really don't require a whole lot of money-spending... i'm sure you can find what you need for nothing more than 350 plus minus :)
Toshiba i think is a great brand... all i can say is that they give you great a oppotunity for good hardware low priced :P

For what you say your mother uses her laptop for, that Toshiba is way more computer than she needs. My wife uses our laptop for basically the same sort of things, her birthday is also next week, and I'm getting her a laptop of her own. It's an HP 2000-428DX that's at Best Buy for $300.

Other options

If she doesn't need mch of a computer...then maybe the refurbished route is the way to go. My wife got me one and it worked great...until I needed a better unit. She took the old refurb and I used the new one. She was happy to have something basic to get on the internet.

Just my $.02

Newegg is a very good site. You can use the filter on the left hand side to filter in the stuff that you're looking for. Maybe something like this. If that's not exactly what you're after you can look around on this page. Use the filter, as I said earlier :).
