Help Finding a Broadband ISP

I am in Southern Nevada, looking for a better ISP. My parents bought Cox.net high speed and are paying I think $80/mo. for basic cable TV + cable internet. I don't know how much they are paying for the individual services but I think they are overpaying for the service we are getting. My guess is that the internet is half or more of that bill. According to Speakeasy, the connection is 2272 kbps down and 489 kbps up. That's through a router though, which is located downstairs and I'm upstairs directly above it. I do not know if this effects the speed much.

I was looking into Verizon FiOS. It sounded wonderful until I found out it's not available in Nevada.

Does anybody know any good, cheaper ISPs in southern Nevada, or a website to compare high speed ISPs? Any help is appreciated.

DSL and satelite tv is your only other option, you will have to check with your local phone company and see what you can get. Do you have SBC? They have a good deal right now for $29.95 a month you get 6MB service. I get 5000kbps down and 720kbps up all day long and with my phone and satelite tv that gets way more channels than basic cable I pay about $140 a month.

$140 a month? That's crazy! I don't want anything other than basic cable, and we will probably continue to use Cox for that. We have DirecTV for satellite TV, but I don't think satellite internet is a good idea because during the summer it gets all cloudy and stormy. Not to mention I don't want to pay $1000 to get another dish installed and just have it fall off like the last time.

SBC is $29.95/mo. for 1.5 MB, and it says it comes with a 'free modem and installation kit' for $20 shipping. I already have a cable modem, and I don't need any more computer peripherals than I already have, what's the difference in this modem? What do I need to set up to switch from cable to DSL? It seems to be about the same service for, assuming my guess is right, about $10/mo. less.

Trizoy, thanks but that website doesn't have any listings for ISP in my area =[

For a switch from cable to DSL, all you need is the DSL modem, (yes it is different). Then you need the phone company to install a dsl loop on your line. It is all part of the set up with SBC. If you have a modem, you can tell them you dont need one, and not be charged.

Broadband ISP selections are far fewer than dialup. Usually you're limited to what your cable TV company offers, or like cell4me says, what your phone company has on offer.
