Yes you can, if you have the money you can buy Acronis True Image 11 and clone it, yes it supports windows Vista

No you can not you have to reinstall the OS on the hard drive.
and what makes you say that sir ?

Because it it has to be installed onto the hard drive but since you mentioned that program... maybe not but it is best just to do a reinstall.

in response,

i have heard you can get a new code from ms, in order to resuse the oem disk. is that true? is there anyother programs that may be cheaper to use?

This will break the license agreement. It wont let you have two active versions of vista with the same key so your wasting your time.

Yes if you remove the current OS off the old hard drive then call MS and they can renew a serial for you.

Use Acronis to copy the old drive to the new drive.
You are not breaking the OEM license agreement by doing the copy. It's still installed on the same PC, right?
I have been upgrading hard drives for years on OEM PCs including newer Vista machines.
Vista will want to be re-activated and, of course, after trying all the other options, you will have to call to activate.
Tell them you upgraded the hard drive or the PC had a hard drive failure and they will gladly activate Vista for you.
Believe me, I have done it many times.

no its not lying as he did upgrade his hd, u really dont even need to tell them the hard drive failed, just that u upgraded to a larger hdd and its asking for u to re activate

I don't think you have to lie about anything. A change of harddrive is perfectly valid according to the license. What you cannot just change is the motherboard/chipset.

how is it done???????

so what then is the process to put vista on the hdd? format current drive first, attempt reinstall, call about activation? which is the best way to do this. anyone recomend a decent hdd cooler/fan aswell?????????

You still have the disk and the Serial number right? Format the current hdd, reinstall it on the other drive. Simple. If it asks about to call in for activation, just do it.

A great hdd cooler: its a bit fancy and a bit much.

just wondering is vista 64bit worth the upgrade, can for small fee upgrade from microsoft. I need a cooler for a wd raptor 10000 150gb, something to use in screwless case 3.5 size. this will be 2nd drive, but my case can run abit warm at times.... this is the one i was looking at, seems well liked, cheap and attaches to bottom of drive.

Thermaltake A2427 Hard drive blue LED cooler----------------- let me know.
