Help in understanding what to upgrade

I have a game that I really enjoy playing, Empire Total War. I don't play video games much, but this game has me hooked due to its historical setup. My computer is lagging when I play it and I want to upgrade my computer system. I'm not sure how to go about upgrading the system since I never had the oppertunity to learn computers. This is my system specifications and I was wondering what I needed to upgrade to make this game run at its best performance.

Computer : Dell Optiplex GX620

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz 2.79GHz

Installed Memory (RAM): 2.00 GB

System Type: 32 bit operating System

Hard Drive : 300 GB/ 140GB Free

Graphics Card: NIVIDIA 8400 GS

I'm thinking that its the Processor that needs to be upgraded....any suggestions for hardware that is compatabile with my desktop would be apprecicated...

thank you

oh yeah total war games are like crazy to try and run, i cant even run rome with a good frame rate on low settings, and i have a computer that was 700 bucks from jsut a year ago, im could be wrong but the only way to play empire on high settings atleast would be to get a new computer

it's the gfx card, the requirements for the game ask for a minimum 2.4ghz p4, recomends a 2.2ghz core 2 duo, yours is closer to the recomended but not as good as that, it is your gfx card, go to newegg.com and they've got some good ones better than that, either of these should be fine, and btw get steam and it has several nice free to play games.

and also with my personal experiences with total war games and my friends, if you want to play it ith half decent graphics and half decent fram rate you need well over the recommended requirements

well if you would lower the resolution then you'd be fine most likely, resolution is a killer along with your shading, turn them down and you'll probably be fine, and also turn down aa and af i think, something like that, but either off or bilinear or trilenear is what you'll want, and you should be good, you really just need to know how to adjust settings, i do these things in the drivers software and it made it so that the game can't do anything else but what i put in the driver.
