Help installing CPU

I just grabbed a new quad core processor (Q6600) and I installed it. Upon booting up I noticed it was running at 90+ degrees Celcius. Thats way too hot right? Is it nessesary to put thermal compund when installing it? It didnt say anything about it in the the CPU manual. Perhaps theres another common mistake I couldve made

Also my 64 bit edition of windows is not booting up, it installs successfully, but upon booting up it gives me the "blue screen of death" and instantly restarts. I have a brand new system and I cant get it to boot. Could these be related?

Yes you use apply thermal compound, unless it was already applied on the heatsink and you just wanted to use the stock stuff.

Yes. No TP = fried CPU.

Thin layer over entire heatshield of the CPU, then a BB-sized dab in the center. Lock the CPU into place on the MoBo. Put the HSF on very gently and then secure it to the MoBo. THe pressure from the HSF being attached will spread out the dab of TP and ensure propper heat transfer.

Ok thanks guys, you think this could be causing the blue screen issue when windows boots? I really hope so. Might have to take the whole thing apart and put it all back together if not.

Yes that would cause the BSOD and crashing. If the temps are really that high then DO NOT use the computer. Open it back up and make sure there is thermal paste/compound applied, also make sure that the heatsink is securely fastened to the motherboard and doesn't move at all.

Thanks for the help. I never applied any kind of TP :(. Ill be sure get some on my way home today and apply it. Im surprised that neither my motherbaord manual or CPU manual mentioned it at all.

On a sadder note yet, my processor reached 95 degrees C after viewing the BIOS for 5 minutes this morning.(It kept shutting itself down while I was looking around the BIOS, I shouldve taken the hint.) I installed windows twice yesterday, it didnt shut down during the installation, but I assume it mustve reached some pretty high temps.

How can I tell wether I wrecked the processor? Will it look burned if I take it out?

If you messed the CPU up you will get nothing when trying to boot. Once you have applied the TP(do not boot anymore until you have done so), and you can boot up, you are good. Otherwise I do not think you have boiled your processor away and lucked out. GL

Well I got TP applied and it worked great, down to 25-35 degrees C. Still getting the BSOD when installing XP. I get stuck in a loop where no matter what mode I start windows (safe mode, last config) I get the BSOD and it restarts. :(:(

Thats because there was an error when you installed Windows. You need to install it from the CD again, don't try to actually boot into Windows.
