Help installing Leopard on Macbook

I'm trying to help my sister get her macbook up and running again. It can't boot into Leopard, so I'm trying to get Leopard reinstalled on the hdd. The problem is that the install hangs early on in the process (the bar gets to about where it says "OS X" and that's as far as it goes). I tried letting it sit like that for over an hour to see if maybe I was just being impatient, but it seems like a total hang. So I restart the comp, insert the disc, and it then spits the disc out without even letting me attempt to install (I hold down Alt/Option when booting). The laptop is getting pretty hot while it's running (she has it hooked up to the charging cable while in use because her battery is totally dead). Right now I'm letting it cool down and am going to attempt to install with it sitting on my laptop cooling pad (dunno if her comp will recognize it).

Any advice? (without having to take it in for repairs)

Ok, just tried it with my cooling pad hooked up. Got a message saying the install failed. Something about not being able to copy files to volume/MacintoshHD.
