Help, just built!

So I followed all the directions and double checked to make sure all the wires are in the correct place. Everything is getting power and everything is in some way connected to the motherboard. But when I turn on the computer there is no signal to my monitor. I also noticed my video card is not always on. But I don't know why... it's in the PCI Slot and there is power running to it. What's going on? However, there was no signal when it was on anyway. Monitor is getting power via a/c adapter and it is connected to the video card via VGA converter.

Everything was just built from the ground up.

Normally motherboards have your 20 or 24 pin connector along with a separate 4 pin connector, is this connected? I had the same symptoms once with one of my first builds and quickly discovered this was the issue, hah. Hope this was it.

Yes, it is connected.

So I just took out the video card and connected my monitor to the motherboard. Still no signal. So I don't think it's the video card though that's what I assumed at first. Perhaps my CPU is busted? I was a little confused when installing it.

on my asus board, there was 2 extra plugs that needed plugging. one was a 4 pin thing, the other was the standard one for hard drives. as well as the big power thing. 24 or whatever it is. so there was 3. but i gave up on my board. i couldnt get the asus to work, so i went to gigabyte. but i had the same problem until i found the 3rd power plug on the board.

No. I checked the manual. The graphics card only needs a 4 pin power cable. Also, if the motherboard graphics isn't working either, then there must be an issue there. I just don't know how to troubleshoot the motherboard aside from making sure the power cable is properly in.

eh, there's a couple of ways to test it. i didnt know before, but there's a lot of problems with asus boards. if its all plugged in and not working, id say its busted. =p

I just checked the CPU.. there was a sticker left on the metal side that looks like it burned. I just cleaned it off and put it back. Still no signal to the monitor. Is the CPU damaged for good? I would think it's fine because the chip side is still good.

ahhhhhhhhh. did you drop some thermal compound inbetween the chip and your heatsink? it could be fried.

How can I troubleshoot it to know whether it's fried or not. No I didn't put any thermal compound on. Was I supposed to? It didn't come with any...

God I hope Newegg takes it back. I can't believe a little sticker ruined it. Actually, I don't even remember a sticker being there.. but when I took the CPU out there was some grey stuff melted on it. So I rubbed it off. Was that the thermal compound? And just to clarify, i'm talking about the metal side of the CPU. Not the side chip side. The chip side is completely fine.

How does a chip get fried? I connected everything right.. there should be no reason for it to suddenly fry.

you mentioned you were using a dvi to vga converter? they often cause a lot of these problems. Try it with a dvi monitor if possible, i dont think the cpu is fried BUT before you put the heatsink back on you will need to reapply some more thermal paste.. what kind of cpu is it? sounds like an amd

It's intel. I'll get some thermal paste. I have a DVI monitor I just don't have the DVI cable. Do you really think getting one may resolve this issue?

Really hope that'll solve it... it has been a pretty frustrating/disappointing night! I was so proud to have put everything together and ready to start using it only to have it failed.
