my fairly new xps m1330 laptop has been trouble free since i bought it in september 08, but today it shut off mid-render. i thought it was just a one time thing, so turned it back on and started the rendering process again, and again it shut off. i walked away for about 2 hours, and tried it again, and it still was shutting off. it gets anywhere from 10-20% complete and then the computer just shuts down. im pretty sure its not heat related becuase the laptop is cool to the touch and i have a zalman laptop cooler running full blast also. it was rendering videos fine monday, and when i try it today it does the shut down thing. anyone have any ideas?

goto start run msconfig then startup tab. turn some of the stuff off your not using or never did. reboot.

shut everything down pretty much in the system tray except the program your using. if there was more then do msconfig again.
how much mem you have?

Well I wouldnt even buy the dell. I dont like dell they always have problems

I agree.

But I would try going in the bios, set all to fail safe defaults.. Pull the system battery and then boot it up. Maybe the power settings got changed some how..... But it does sound like a heat issue. The system fan should not be on full blast when the laptop is on for just a short time.

Id call tell and complain they might replace it for you or repair it if its under warranty.

Go in the bios and let it sit there for 5 or 10 min. If it does not lock up or turn off. Then it could be something with windows. If it turns off while your in bios its deff a hard ware related issue.

i called dell and they said they could fix it for 150 bucks. they said it was a software issue and im not sure what that means.

Dell is a rip off. Thats why I dont do anything with them. I would reinstall windows. See if that helps before you spend $150. Could be a video card driver issue as well.

maybe you could ask them specifically what was wrong, say a driver or something, and then find it hidden somewhere on the interwebz

ya maybe, i just tried to make a dvd and it shut down while doing that too, seems like anything more than a little internet browsing makes it shut down
