My comp is about two years old, last few days i kept seeing virtual memory low, which i havent seen before, and performance has been lacking. then i went to reboot and got the black screen and the voice through the speakers, system failed CPU test. well i thought it was cpu and replaced with a new one, and even reset bios and still same thing, so now im thinking maybe the MB is shot, anyone else have any ideas. My fans and lights come on so i think Power supply is ok. The power light comes on, but the light that blinks when the computer is working just stays lit? brand new CPU. What could be my prob, I have a P4 2.8 with an ASUS P4P800-E DELUXE Socket 478 Intel 865PE ATX Intel Motherboard. any help would be appreciated.

If you have not been doing any overclocking, then your motherboard is not dead.

Dead motherboards don't show anything on the screen or beep on booting. They may spin fans and the power LED may come on.

Without any audio beeping being heard along with the failure to detect a working cpu after clearing the cmos you are probably in need of a new bios EProm if it isn't the main chipset that let go on you. Asus will send out a new EProm with the bios version you request for about $25 on average if that turns out to be the problem since the bios detects the hardwares. You would have to email tech support there and wait for the response for ordering info.

After two years you want to move up to a board that will still run your new cpu and memory plus leave room for later upgrades. Bad caps on the board would fail a board without seeing a failed cpu message.

i dont get anything on my screen, i get a black screen and the message through the speakers that system failed cpu test. this is just my back up machine and new mbs are like 50-60 bucks but was just wondering what you guys thought it could be.

You don't have to OC to see a board crap out. A board is the most involved hardware on a system. A number of problems can surface when something decides to let go.

With the confirmation that the two cpus tried out are not the problem plus the clearing of the cmos you are looking at a bad bios chip there as the most likely cause for seeing this error. You can usually order a replacement chip where all you need is the dip insertion tool and make sure to insert in correctly. If you put it in reversed it would cook the new one. For an older with new ones seen at a much lower cost. Get another board. That will save any further problems with it.

seeing that MBs for my old comp cost like 50 bucks, im just gonna get a new MB and see how that works, when replacing the MB do i need to do anything besides plug and play?

As long as the board will take you current hardwares like cpu, memory, video and sound cards you should ok there. You could boost a couple of items like increase memory or go with a newer video card. But you can also put that aside for a new build later.
