Help me build a budget rig for ipod

lol the "gayest" things youve ever heard.
in case you hadn't noticed, 480 is a bigger number than 400. and hes not building a whole system like you suggested, hes getting a new motherboard and cpu if i remember correctly... and reusing some old parts like a case and psu...
firewire vs. usb... it depends.
If you DO decide to get a new processor, get an Intel.
i disagree. HOW MANY TIMES would someone convert their music? i duno how other people do it, but if i convert music from a cd or from a different filetype, i do it once and save the copy of the mp3 (which is the format i use)
even converting from the cd takes extra time just from reading the cd...
i mean, it'll take awhile (not HORRIBLY long) but there's no advantage to getting a dual core processor (better than hyperthreading obviously) for something you're going to do a single time.
if you do buy an intel, the only reason to is because its cheaper. celeron d would do just fine.

Oh just to let you know that the iPod video does not support Firewire, and USB 2.0 i find is much faster that the standard firewire.

wow now!! didnt think id get that many post so quickly, even tho alot of them are hijacked usb vs firewire but sill relevant

The whole reason im goin this is because my gf has a p4 DELL and for some reason it is INCREDIBLY SLOW. it is a p4 1.79 ghz but it literally takes 10-12 minutes just to open windows. when you click on the start button it takes about twenty seconds. When i open task manager and go to performance the processor jumps all over the place. i will be sittin there lookin at the desktop with nothing else running and the processor usage will jump to like 90% without even moving the mouse. it goes crazy. ill have to take a screen shop of what the usage history looks like. I would just replace the processor but with dell's, bein as i cant get into bios i dont think it would work correctly

As far as the debate between Firewire and USB goes, check out this thread:

Do not get a whole new system just for your iPod, seriously, that has got to be the gayest thing i have ever heard.

With his computer being that slow, I disagree with you Motorxdude. He wouldn't even have to spend much to get better than that!

Ok to say things again the iPod he is wanting to use this computer for doesn't support Firewire, Apple say "The chip would be to big and consume more power" oh and the 2.5" screen will not?!

Ok I do have a 30gig iPod Video aswell and I would rather have a creative any day to be honest!

A P4 1.79Ghz would be plenty, he probably just needs a good format.
*reformat
btw OMEGA is right... plus it might have something like 128mb of ram, which would make the programs try to open from the hard drive... thats not good.
just make sure the thing has like 512mb of ram and just about any processor will do, as we've said. whether you like firewire or usb (personally i dont think it matters) you can customize your system by getting a motherboard with both if you like.
anyways... was i right? how much ram does the P4 system have? lol
(better yet, how much of it is being using on a system reboot haha)

Meh, i think you guys are too spending money happy. If it where up to me, i would reformat that p4 and use that, it is plenty fast. But W/E, i guess you can listen to fade2green514 and spend $400 on computer parts just so you can transfer stuff to your ipod at the same speed as a pIII.

For a new CPU, you will need a new mobo. This will be at least 200 dollars. i dont know how you would go much less.
you can get a sempron 3100+ and motherboard for only 90$ 2800 for 80$ or 2600 for only 70$. cpu mobo combos at frys. socket 754's.

what if the P4 system only has 128-mb of ram?
i know my neighbor has a P4 1.8ghz and 128mb of ram... slow as heck! almost un-usable. we'll see though, for all we know it has 512mb of RAM and its perfectly usable after a reformat. of course, they may want to use to iPod to back some stuff up first. :D iPods (or any flash drive/external HDD) are convenient like that arent they?! :D
