Sure man.. I can suggest a few things. First off, I suggest shopping at NewEgg. (www.newegg.com) Great prices and great shipping.
With that budget I would start with a AMD processor.
AMD Athlon 3000+ XP 154$

ASUS A7N8X 78$ http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-455&depa=1
MSI Radeon 9800 Pro 195$
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-127-127&depa=1
Corsair 512 PC3200 DDR Ram 79$
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-026&depa=1
Western Digi 120gig HD 85$
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-118&depa=1
Antec 430w TruPower PSU 69$
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-103-908&depa=0
TOTAL=660$

The case is up to you man.. its all preference (get one without a PSU, you want that antec)

These are just my suggestions on how I would spend the money.

Nice setup there, I'd drop the CPU to the lower XP2500 to save some cash, since he's reccomended an aftermarket fan you should be able to OC all the way to the top anyways :)

like the setup and the price. got a few questions though is the onboard audio of the mobo give pretty good quality or would it be better off upgraded and also how would that msi card compare to the ati 9800?

Sound card will be acceptable -- then again you'll be more interested in getting the overall system performance first. As for the video card, the MSI one will be superior but it will also cost more :)

It would be somewhat of a waste as all the Barton chips (2500,2700,2800,3000) will OC to 3200 and beyond :)

The system I have in my signature was slightly under $800 w/ shipping all from new egg. Its a seriously good computer.. Great with most games, runs all aplications, stores lots of stuff. Take a look at the specs

For what you will be doing the XP would be great. XP's dont die unless you push them too hard, and thats kinda hard to do without a) messing up or b) doing some extreme clocking. I prefer the 400fsb on the 3200+ so that is why i suggested that.

What i suggested it almost what I have but with a ABit board and it runs games like COD at 200+FPS. It will run Doom3 great also.
