Help me build my new rig

I've had the same PC for about 4 years now, and it's definately not a gaming PC. The only games it can play is CS 1.6 and CZ. I've attempted to play CSS, and BF2, but it can't handle it (lags extremely bad). I bought a GeForce FX 5500, and the only thing that did was make watching videos on my PC run extremely smooth, but did nothing to make my PC be able to play the latest games. I also upgraded to 1 gig of ram, that did nothing.

The point is, my PC is very outdated, and I need to build a new one.

With Christmas in a month, it will be PERFECT. I've been researching computers for years, and have been off and on about getting a new PC. The time has come, and I need a new one.

I could go to best buy, look at a prebuilt, but I want to build my own. First, they are very easy to build, second, when I need to upgrade, I will know what my PC can handle and what parts I need to get.

What I need is help picking out parts. I know what everything is, what they do; I'm not a newbie. I'm only asking for help because I want to make sure I'm getting a great gaming PC.

My budget is $400. Yes, I know, it's not a lot to work with, but it's all I'll be getting for christmas. I can't go over $400, unless it is a "medium lag or no lag" situation. I will also be using my old keyboard, mouse, and speakers. Possibly the monitor if it will work with my mobo or video card.

I don't know where to start. I don't exactly know what parts I need to get so they will work with the others. Here is what I have so far:

Case
AMD Athlon 64 Processor
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard
EVGA GeForce 8600GT 256MB
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

I need help with the mobo, the HDD, and the video card. I am open to changing things and new suggestions. Please help me out, thanks!

i'd recommend saving your case, going with a cheaper motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128059), getting an E2180 and overclock with an aftermarket cooler (AMD sucks nowadays).

And if you hadn't noticed, mine was cheaper, with the same chipset but with lower memory support.

Also, there is no CD-R drive, how am I supposed to play CD's or install games?

There is also no CPU fan, unless it comes with one

then get some budget ram and spend the rest on a graphics card, or get a shit one and buy a good one (like an HD 3870) when you can. Nvidia cards don't overclock well and don't have that good of drivers.

YOUR JOKING! I mean, get real! 1GB RAM, E2180, and a HD3870? You have alot to learn kid... Everything I just listed will bottleneck the performance. Meaning, you'll have alot poorer performance than the build I just posted...

FYI ATI's card drivers have problems. nVidia is close to trouble free! (ATI fan? :rolleyes:)

nVidia cards can overclock like a dream...

You posted a 7600GT, I think he wants to play games past 2006. I RECOMMENDED not spending 400 on a gaming PC because you just won't get good performance.

The motherboard you posted doesn't even have any reviews for it, and 62 dollars is pretty cheap for a motherboard imo.

As for the E2180 bottlenecking the 3870, they overclock to about 3.5ghz and are still stable, you won't lose that much performance..

A $16.99 450W PSU? LOL

How arrogant... Probably a very first timer. $400 is all he has, he'll need a computer. You sound like a salesperson. "Not enough cash, come back later."

$62 is a great price. It uses the same chipset as the P31-DS3L, which is a relative of the P35's, just -4GB memory support.

If you've noticed, that motherboard is OPEN BOX :rolleyes: And if you knew Newegg, Newegg disables reviews for OPEN BOX ITEMS! :eek: Oops, left that out! Look at the other MSI P31 board, 4/5 stars! Wow! :rolleyes:

Oh wow! :rolleyes: Like a beginner in computers is going to overclock with absolutely no experience and void his warranties :rolleyes: And for your information, I doubt even a Zalman 9700 could even get NEAR 3.5. You'd need to spend another $50 on a cooler, and around $10 on thermal paste, even more on a better PSU, and some case fans! Ooh, already outta the budget, don't you agree? :rolleyes:

I'm betting your rig somewhat looks like "P4 3GHz, 1GB DDR266, 80GB, 8800Ultra...

If you think you can get a better PSU for $20 more, go for it. But I don't see you doing anything...

At least I can actually BUILD one and not just stand around doing absolutely nothing...

You just said it yourself. $400 won't be good compared to a Q6600 or a E6850 will it? It's a $400 PC. You can't expect much outta it. You think you can do better, go for it. Don't stand around watching and critisizing...
