Help Me choose MOBO and MEMORY please,

1. Which is a better MOBO (building for gaming and mulitmedia).2. What is the best memory for this MOBO, I would like somthing i can put in and use stock, not much of an o'c er and still new to building. hoping for something higher than 800. If i may ask please choose from newegg or zipzoomfly, So that i may find and purchase... thank you for all your input.

will buy from newegg.com, or zipzoomfly.com

The specifications show that model will run 667, 800, 1066, and 1200mhz memory with an 8gb max. capacity. http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products...erboard&ProductID=2810&ProductName=GA-X48-DS4

The recommended voltage for the board shows 1.8v while the 4 brands of PC2-9600 memory for the faster 1200mhz memory at newegg shows 2.1v and higher for that speed. For those 4 kits you see a pair of 1gb dimms in each. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...010170147+1052427322&name=DDR2+1200+(PC2+9600)

For 1066mhz memory there's a far larger variety to look over as seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...010170147+1052420643&name=DDR2+1066+(PC2+8500)

The problem of 2-2.1v or 2.1-2.3v is still seen. "4 x 1.8V DDR2 DIMM sockets supporting up to 8 GB of system memory" as seen in the board specifications. Some memory will run at the lower voltage while you will need to shop around for the memory that shows the 1.8-2v range.

The 1.8 voltage support for a gigabyte boards just means that it can support memory down to 1.8 volts. Not thats its as high as it will go. 2.0, 2.1 or 2.2 volts will run just fine.

yeah most motherboards will go up to about 2.4V, mine does about 2.5 before any problems arise. but 1.8 is pretty much the lowest voltage you'll see.

Both boards support upto DDR2 1200. G Skill, OCZ, Corsair, Crucial, Patriot, Mushkin are all good brands

OCZ is a premium brand often seeing a slightly higher price then others. Patriot works for many while being a more recent brand to emerge. Others use Team without complaints. Others like Kingston, Corsair, Crucial, and a few others are the more popular along with those.

The idea of going for memory that runs on a lower voltage since you are not planning to oc or heavy gaming is simply to see the memory operate at lower temps. That tends to prevent a long list of potential errors when memory runs hot plus seeing memory last longer.

Patriot isnt a recent brand. Might be for you since your a newbee. But its been around since 1985. Plus as far as I know its still made in the USA.

@ 2.1v vs 2.3v which is better for mobo---don't want to cook

memory 1200 @ 2.3 volts, or say something like 1066 @ 2.1 which is safer and won't cook my board???? if i don't oc, and put in stock is it better to go with 1200, @2.3 or would safer bet be to go with something less wether it is 1066, 1150, etc????????????

Really you not going to see much of a preformance difference with anything over DDR2 800. Find some good DDR2 800 with low timming with the lowest voltage. Some 800 will have low timming with high stock voltage, all they have done is bump the stock voltage up to get better timming.

what about latency?????/

i see number like 5 5 5 18, or 5 5 5 15,,,, from what i understand you should have first numbers add up to final number??????? how does that work,, i see 2-3 -4 -5 kinds of g-skill with diffrent numbers however same memory for great diffrences in prices.... I understand------------------ most import item is to have lowest # for latency----------- ??? is that correct

so which would be better from these----

oc reaper

patriot

maybe oc becuuse of lower volts?????? put in g-skill incase others are risky of being cooked due to volts???? or that is not concern in not oc'ing.... see people say their mem lasted 2-3 months and was cooked cause of volts..... what do you think.

stanglehold would recommend the reaper, or the g-skill.......... reaper is 2.1--2.3, the g-skill is 2.0-2.1,,,,,,,,,, or do you have another recomdation----- i was trying to keep it lower than 2.3 volts...................

Patriot isnt a recent brand. Might be for you since your a newbee. But its been around since 1985. Plus as far as I know its still made in the USA.

Patriot is more recent then brands like PNY, Crucial, Corsair, and some others. Vendors like newegg and TigerDirect only more recently started carrying it as well as a few others. Knothead

luckyboonstick refer to the user manual for the board there to see what settings are seen in the installing memory section. You'll probably see the 1.8, 1.9, and 2v settings.

As far as undervolting memory that won't cook anything like overvolting would. The higher voltage required by some memory would simply underpower the memory itself keeping it from functioning as it should.

The one thing the newbie there won't tell you is to also look over the memory referal list seen right at Gigabyte to see a large variety of memory advised for that model board. http://www.gigabyte-usa.com/FileList/MemorySupport/motherboard_memory_ga-ex38-ds4.pdf The board will run four 2gb dimms max.
