Hey guys:),

ive been trying to connect my XP Pc to my other Vista Pc via a simple ethernet cable from one computer to the other. Both computers connect to the internet wirelessly. My vista PC says its on an unidentified network in the LAN connection. Ive tried setting a IP address for both PC in the TCP/IP part but no avail . Can anyone help me please? I just want to share files and create a small network between them but it seems uncompitable. Im using a VIA Rhine II ethernet adapter on my XP Pc and a Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Controller on my vista Pc. Would be great if you could tell me exactly what to do. The Xp PC does have microsoft TCP/IP version 6 installed but wont let me into properties.

Cheers guys.:)

well number one. if you tinker with the ip addresses you might not be able to connect to the internet after that.

now first off what are your computers connecting to wirelessly? most likely a router, right?
if so your computers are already connected. you just have to make sure that they are in the same workgroup.
to do that in the XP machine:
rightclick my computer -> click on properties -> click on computer name:
there it should say Workgroup and then the name of the workgoup.

then go to the vista machine and check it. if it has a different name, change the XP machines workgroup name since thats the one that i know how to change. it might be different on vista.
where it says to rename this computer or join a domain, click change. click change. then just select workgroup and type in the same workgroup name that the vista machine has. after that your going to have to restart your machine.

hey thanks for your suggestion but I dont think you understood my problem. By connecting the two computers together I want to be able to share files. I do have them on the same workgroup via a router. But wanting to share files faster at 100 mbps. Not trying to share internet. I just want to know how to share files by LAN. As I said vista is saying the connection is an undentified network and when I try and diagnose it says my IP settings are wrong. I think my PC thinks this connection is for internet. I just really need to know the correct settings.

gotcha.

well if you change the ip address then you most likely wont be able to access the internet.
now make sure that the cable your using is a crossover cable. most devices now have MDX(i believe thats what it is called) which makes it so that it doesnt matter which cable you connect it will just fix it for you. but you are going to have to make sure that your adapters have that feature.
you can disconnect from the router and just hook up the two computers together.
use these ip address for the computers:
vista comp: ip address: 192.168.1.1
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
and blank for the default gateway
for the xp comp:
ip address 192.168.1.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

once you do that ping the computer to see if you have connectivity.
then just make sure that you have file and printer sharing installed on both of your computers. after that you should be able to share files and such.

okay now on my vista OS PC it says limited connectivity and unidentified network. When i ping from either computer it says request timed out packets sent 4 recieved 0 lost 4 100% loss. When I diagnose on vista PC it says "The network adapter Local area connection does not have a valid IP configuration. this is required to connect to the internet" when obviously im just trying to share files.

ive tried setting permissions but when I try to add users from the other PC in network location they arent displayed. so whenever I try a folder from either of the PCs it still says access denied
