help me pick my new videocard

im looking at getting a samsung lcd, and i want something that i can play games on, does not have to be perfect, but i dont want a pos either, thanks guys
 
Oh, you're building a new PC. I was going by what I saw in your signature. What exactly is your budget, of all, i suggest you get the 8800GT if you can afford it, or the HD3870.
 
ok now heres the question that will make up my mind, is the 8800 worth the extra 100 or so? if you can tell me that it is hands down a better choice i would prolly get one
 
The 8800GT is far better than the HD 3850, which is more of a midrange card, the 8800GT is also a bit better than the HD 3870. I personally believe its worth the price.
 
Well, theres acutally five 8800, which one are you talking about??

Here, this will give you an idea. (in order of performance from left to right)

Well, the HD3850 or the HD2900PRO would very easily be a big upgrade from inegrated graphics. Any one of those two which fall into the $150-$200 range, are the best bang for the buck for budget people. Now, if you want the best of the best in price/performance ratio, get a 8800GT or the HD3870 which you could get for $250-300. Lastly, if you would like to get the best out there no matter the cost, the best cards are the 8800GTS (G92), 8800GTX and last but not least, the great 8800Ultra. All these fall into the $330-1000! :)

Ultimately it all comes down to how much you want to spends since all these cards are pretty much in proportions for their price.

ramodkk you seem to be extremelt well versed with computers, do you work with computers for a living? thank you for all of the help, the best part is that you give a very good explanation with all of this as well
 
I'd go for the 2900Pro, its had a price drop since the 3870 has pretty much taken over. This card is a performer but a power hog, so be sure you have a nice power supply. It performs just with the 3870 and 8800GT at the moment.

$160 (its was over $300, i think they are going to be discontinued)

Otherwise i would get the 3850. What are the specs of the computer it would be going in? im hoping its PCIe, and if its one of those in your sig. Its going to be bottlenecked, so i would get nothing more than a 3850. If its a small case, you will alse need to be sure it will fit.

Well thanks! I don't work with comps for a living but I have some experience building them. And also that's why we're here in the Computer Forum anyways! You'll learn a lot from this site :)

And yeah, as ThatGuy16 said, the HD2900Pro is a very nice card but may go down with the new cards that came out. BUT, the HD3850 is still a great choice and I'm sure will not let you down. :D

oh that's fabulous! I will get that 2900pro. great, this is great. I'm doing windows xp, and I don;t do games anyway, so great!

I do have one question about it though - about the 5.1 sound. I'm getting a mobo that has 7.1 sound,and it's supposed to be really good. I don;t want that 5.1 sound on the graphics card.
Would I be able to disable it?

well i am building from the ground up, so far i know that i will be getting a duo core, 2-4 gbs of ram and 250-500 gb hdd, im not sure on brands or anything, im just trying to get some help with all of that, i dont do hardcore gaming, i really like to play rts games like starcraft and age of empires, but i would like to be able to play games like madden nhl i love playing sports games

lol, i would not dream of trying to upgrade a dinosaur like the one in my sig, it would be a waste
 
a new motherboard that is sli or crossfire compatible will have a bridge then you need two card with the same gpu and you're good to go.
 
SLI motherboards aren't too pricey, maybe like 15 bucks more then a motherboard of the same model without the sli feature.
