Help me pick out my new ram.

Okay so I'm starting a few upgrades including a new mobo/cpu/ram. I already picked out my mobo and my cpu. I'll be going with the FX6300 and a the ASRock 970 Extreme 4. My question is, what ram do I go with? I want 8gb of ddr3 (obviously).

I was going to go with 1866 as that's the fastest that the 6300 will support. The Kingston Hyper X i have in mind is has a CL of 9. Would 1866 with a cl of 9 be faster than 1600 with a cl of 8?

yes 1866 cl 9 is a bit faster then 1600 cl8

i like this ones

Corsair Dominator CMD8GX3M4A1600C8
but you have to look to the voltage to.
mayby youre mobo is not comaptible with mem running on 1.6 volt

the extreme 4 is compatible with 1.65V RAM. Practically every board these days is unless you get an extremely low quality board.

@OP. That is the fastest memory that your memory controller supports. However, look at the max your board supports as a definite top of the line.
Also, look at the samsung 30nm RAM and set it to 1866 9-9-9-24 1T @ 1.4 ish volts and you will have less power consumption and less price for the exact same performance.

Thanks for your help, although I forgot to mention that I want 2 4gb sticks to allow for expansion, and I also want some memory that has a blue (black is my second choice) heatspreader on it.

Let's also keep the price between 50-60 dollars.

Is there any particular reason for you wanting a heatspreader? Even at 2400 @ 1.65V there is not enough heat coming off teh RAM to warrant it. But if you want them for the look, then that's a decent reason.

Look at Patriot G2 series, Kingston Hyperx, Geil has heatspreaders too i think, as does corsair and g.skill . really, RAM is RAM unless you get the 30nm Samsung ram. Everything else out there is 45nm Hynix and Samsung chips and they perform exactly the same.

Yes, it's mostly aesthetic reasons. I've been considering kingston hyper x for awhile now. The other ideas I had are gskill and corsair.

Well what should I look for when it comes to timing? From what I understand, lower timing numbers are better.

you want the lowest numbers you can find at your desired speed. The number that is most important is the second one. 9-9-9-24 will feel the same as 8-9-8-24. really for 1866 CAS 9 (9-9-9-24) s about as good as you get. CAS 7 is decently low for 1600 and 1333.

It's low but more expensive, and you're not really gaining anything.

I'll go with the Kingston HyperX Genesis, I believe. Fit's all my criteria and has a nice price point.

you gain a little performance, but not worth the price. You can also try lowering the timings yourself. Like my samsungs with do CAS 7 @ stock or 9-10-10-28 1T @ 2133 on a RAM that is rated for 11-11-11-30 2T @ 1600.
But yea,the hyperx is decent RAM.
