I just got my new quad core(thanks again newegg) I switched out my dual core, and turned it on. Walla! My computer starts loading vista. then just after the windows logo flashes, i get a blue screen. WTF?!?! it was going sooo well. Its a phenom 9600(in know, but i wasn't going to rebuild the whole comp) Its on a msi K9a2 mobo, which is supposed to support amd quad cores, but its not really helping me right now. I got mad, so took out the quad, and put back in my dual. and...it runs fine again. any help?

The user manual or support site has to do that for you. The bios version is generally seen on the post screens when you first power up any system. An alternative is opening the regedit tool and opening up the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE hive by clicking the plus sign on the left side.
In each hive it will look like you are opening up sub folders in a directory on the drive itself. You want "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>HARDWARE>DESCRIPTION>System" where you then look for the "SystemBiosVersion" and "SystemBiosDate" entries. Those will also look like sub folders. You'll have to excuse the separation seen with the m letter at the end of the quote.

so, i thought it might be any number of things. So i went through all 4 gigs of ram, and nothing was wrong. I went through three gpus i have, still didn't work. I tested the power supply, which was fine. I switched out my dvd drive, which there was nothing wrong with. It could be my hdd, but it wouldn't work with my dual if it won't work with my quad. I had only my psu, mobo, cpu, and hdd hooked up, and it posted and took me into vista. 10 seconds in(while i was clicking on my computer to see if it would egister the phenom) it bsod on me. idk what the problem is. Bad chip? possibly. I am in the proscess of switching everything to another mobo i have lying around to see if it is the k9a2(which i pray to god it isn't)

If your board ran fine with the dual core all that was a waste of time your board is a AM2+ board so you should not have to flash the bios to get it to boot. If the board makes it through post into booting Vista, then restarts its probably Vista freaking out ( like thats strange)
. Do you have the Dual Core optimizer installed because you had the X2. If so uninstall it put the X4 back in and see if it boots into Vista now. Plus make sure the boards atleast has the voltage for the Phenom set to 1.25.

What stepping Phenom is that? If it's not B3 or later, it's got a bug which could be the problem ... disabling L3 should fix it, but it comes with a performance penalty, plus you'll probably have update your BIOS to do it anyway. If it's B3, it could be a bad chip alright...
The patch doesnt disable the L3, plus the reason for the TLB patch has never been duplicated on a desktop or a Server for that matter. Its only showed up in Lab test. This is another example of how Web sites and people try to bash AMD by stating things as facts when there no truth to it at all. The L3 errata in the translation lookaside buffer has been stated that more than likely will never show up on a destop only a Server under certain workloads when all 4 core are at the max and the L3 is fully loaded.
