ok so my family recently purchased a new computer and i got the old one which connected to the internet via wifi adapter. since it is now mine i wiped the drives and its back to factory settings. but now i cant get on the internet because the adapters drive is gone. so i downloaded the drive off of linksys and i dont know what to do from there. im pretty new to computers so if you guys could help me out in the simplest ways id appreciate it. thanks and i hope this all makes sense and btw my operating system is windows xp and the wireless adapter is a linksys model # wmp54gs

there will be a setup file or application file double click this and it will install the the drivers and software for your adapter

thank you for your help in advance but i have to run errands i will be back later and hopeflly you will be able to help me. thanks!!!

Extract the drivers. Then go into the device manager, right click the wifi adapter, and choose "Update Driver". Then navigate to the extraction folder.

Most likely it will extract a .exe setup file in a subfolder. With Dell, the default dir is C:/Dell/NameOfDriver/ where the NameOfDriver appears to be a random string of letters & numbers. So open up the file again, and look where it is extracting to. Then navigate there in Windows Exporer, and look for an executable file. There will probably be lots of other files [like .inf, or .dat or other kinds of files] in the directory. Once you find the right executable [sometimes there are several], open it and then just keep clicking next till it installs. :D
